Hey, guys... I just liberated my first 68k. Her name is Chloe, and she's a Powerbook 5300c. I'm so jazzed its not even funny.

Anyway, I got it so I could use all of my writing software on the go (cause who can write anything new sitting in the same room everyday?). The only problem is that some of the software needs to be installed off of a CD.

What kind of external SCSI CD-Rom drives are compatible with Chloe? I also thought that maybe I could get a PCMCIA network card and use my desktop's CD-Rom drive as a network drive or something. Is that at all possible?

Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated!

Anthony

Aieee! I hope that is ISN'T a 5300c! Is that the deadly shadow of a padlock I see approaching?

If it's a 5300, then it's hardly 68k, is it?

Well, Ajax, its like this. You have touched on a long-running battle in these here forums. You say you have a Powerbook 5300c, which if true contains PowerPC processor, not a 68k processor. Now, some people (who do have the power to padlock threads) want to keep the 68kMLA safe for the older generation, prePPC, true 68k Macintoshs.

Me, I think 68k computer are great, but so are PPCs. And I like anyone who shows enthusiasm for their newly found pride and joy and makes great use of older Apple Computer products (even if it is based on officially contrabanded technology). What I am try to say is that I hope you stay and tell us more about Chloe, although I do also like that the 68kMLA stays 68k.

(perhaps someone with godlike power can move this topic to the Lounge where discussions of PPC computer are officially tolerated)

Is it a 5300c, or was that a typo? If so, then it's not a "Liberation" in the 68kMLA sense.

Now, at the risk of ruffling a few feathers, I'm going to disagree slightly with the rest of the Army. Please feel free to respond; friendly debate is fun!

I don't actually agree that only 68k machines count as "liberations." As several others have observed, some of the older PPC-based machines are old enough to be in danger of the same kind of neglect and abuse as our beloved 68ks, and thus are just as much in need of liberation as any 68k. So, for that reason, I am actually counting the two 6100s I got on my last Swap Shop haul in my liberation total. (Note that on my sig, it says, "Total Macs liberated," not "Total 68ks liberated.")

I do agree, however, that these forums are intended for discussion of 68k machines; there are many other places on the Web where Power Macs are discussed.

So yes, move the thread into the Lounge and keep it open. And Ajax, welcome to the 68kMLA. Remain vigilant, for there are more Macs out there in need of your faithful service.

I totally agree with GORDOOM. I know some mac users that if it's in a beige box, it's too old to use. I don't even tell salesmen at the microcenter what i'm buying that usb card (or whatever) for anymore, as soon as they hear 8500 (or whatever) they get all confused and say stupid stuff like "those have pci slots?" So if they ask I get all proud and strong and say "my dp800" and leave it at that.

So, I agree that the Legacy macs' time is coming closer and closer to an end. If it becomes more and more an issue about the PPC and the 68kMLA, maybe we could spin off a sister site called something like the PPC Macintosh Liberation Army. (I know I'm an original genius. )

So, before Ajax thinks that all we do is argue about 68k vs. PPC, here's some answers to the original questions.

A 5300c has a special SCSI connector, so you'll need an HDI-30 to Centronics SCSI cable to connect Chloe to a SCSI peripheral. Just about any CD-ROM drive that is compatible with Apples should work for you (key issue is getting the software driver that is compatible with the version of the OS that you are using, Which version are you using?).

But if all you need to do is install some software from a CD-ROM on to Chloe, you may not need to buy a drive at all. You could network Chloe to your desktop computer so that Chloe's harddisk shows up on your desktop's desktop (what kind of desktop machine to you use?). Then you could install the software from the desktop's CD-ROM directly onto Chloe (and avoid the cost of a second drive). If you only need to install fairly small applications very rarely and to transfer an occasional small file, then I recommend LocalTalk (it is very slow, but very cheap and easy). Note that the only hitch to installing over a network is if the installer puts any files in your System folder (like Preferences, Control Panels, or Extensions) then you will need to move those files manually over to Chloe.

If you don't like the thought of waiting a hour while some massive file is put on Chloe, then you can look into getting a PCMCIA ethernet card. I am not sure about wireless networking for Chloe, probably the card that Orinoco makes would work, if you want to go that route.

Others here might have a different 2 cents (or may even be able to offer 4 cents of advice).

Enjoy Chloe, I know how nice it is not to be tied to a deskbound computer.

I have a 5300c also. It's a pretty nice laptop, but since the processor doesn't have a L2 cache, it's not quite as fast as it should be. If you have enough RAM (16 MB or more), OS 8.1 runs nicely.

An AppleCD 600e external CD-ROM or something like it works pretty well. You'll need two cables to hook it up. You need a 50-pin Centronics connector to DB-25 connector cable. Then, you need the HDI-30 to DB-25 adapter. It plugs into the squarish-looking port on back.

Get a CD-ROM drive for Chloe; you can't live without it. If you want to transfer between machines, get either a PCMCIA ethernet card or a SCSI zip drive.

Good luck!

Can't you also get HDI-30 to 50-pin Centronics SCSI cables? I thought I had seen them around...

But I agree: a CD-ROM drive is a needful thing. Then again, so is an Ethernet card...

they're a lot more common than the DB-25 cables.

Here's some more info on 5300:

http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/seagate/536/pb5300.html

If a Zip drive is of interest, it looks like you might (with a bit'o EBaying) be able to find a VST Zip drive that goes in the floppy drive/expansion bay of Chloe.

Don't bother with the zip in the media bay. The SCSI Zip is really cheap (I've seen them for $40 refurbished), and you can use it with any beige Mac.

I just mentioned the cable because that's what I use.

I don't know much about powerbooks.
