Ok! I'd like to propose a VOTE!
With two different scenarios including my server.

A:A cable internet connection
B:the same-old dial-up internet connection

Should I put my servers back online?

k.
I closed it because, first of all, I wasn't really getting any hits (this isn't really the reason).

I am also sick of using the primary PCs for web hosting (it slows it down when I'm trying to play games, etc.

A couple of people were complaining about speed (i told you all, I can't help it!)

Some people said content sucked (UPLOAD!)

I need a server. (I'm looking!)(I could use the SE but I don't have any way to get it on my LAN for internet access [is hotline server compatible with proxy?])

I was thinking more along the line of $25
I know how you all love macs, but I need a server to share the PC stuff with.

Can someone tell me how to make my SE a server? I can use that, but I don't know how!

yeah, my server isn't doing squat. I'm ok with it. I'm just rushing out to get those new harddrives right now. I'll probably set it up on carracho and do personal stuff with it.

I vote to stick with internet you have. Although i like the idea with the cable. My service sucks so it's hard to justify it for the price. So it's a win/lose situation for me. Do what YOU want to do.

You can get 601's for $25. It's hard to get anything off the ground when there are already established options. We have 2 main servers (one running) that are chock full of fun stuff, along with various other 68k servers not run by us. If no one comes, don't put any money into it. If you think it's worth it, do as you please. I'm not sure there's going to be much interest for a while

I want to get the PC server anyway for all the PCs that my family uses currently. I'll set up the SE as a server if I can get an ethernet card and a large HD. Otherwise it WILL be hosted on Windoze again! I'M GONNA NEED A BIGGER ETHERNET HUB IF I KEEP PLANNING TO ADD SO MANY MORE COMPUTERS!

Any other comments?

Once I can get my DAD TO BRING ME DOWNTOWN!!!
I'll look at Mendelsons. They're supposed to have lots of "discontinued" merchandice for good prices!
Months ago AnubisTTP said they had a bunch of mac stuff there!
My dad said he'd take me! Weeks later I'm still waiting!
GRRRRR!
Cable will definitely be better than dial-up! Supposedly some people with this AOL Cable get 50kbps download speeds! Its $55 though. The only two broadband providers in my area are:

ROADRUNNER HIGH SPEED ONLINE --CABLE
AOL BROADBAND CABLE --CABLE

Roadrunner is cheaper and from what I've heard a lot better, but we don't subscribe to cable service, so it could wind up being more because of the cable subscription fee.

Is there anybody that has Roadrunner or knows anybody that hads Roadrunner and dosen't have the cable TV service?

My server is on RoadRunner, and it is obviously quite fast (from what I hear).

The basic cable sub. is $30 or more a month, plus the $40 a month for RoadRunner.

but, of course that speedy connection supports a large home network with about 12 computers using it as an internet service...I have a 24 port hub in my room, 5 port router in the peecee/q840av room, and 5 port hub in the garage (hotline server/IIci).

I think it's time for a Bolo LAN party

Hey quadra, got questions since cable isnt in my area yet. I know it is better than DSL, but by how much?

When 2 ppl are on your server, what speeds do both they and you get?

Also, by itself, how fast do you get?

Just wondering when cable DOES get here (supposedly next 6 months...) how fast i should jump on the band wagon.

I don't know, I have never used DSL, But I can get download speeds of around 400k/sec off of T-1 servers (but quite rare)

They probably get the normal 30-40k/sec, since when I'm on the server, it just sends packets over my LAN, not through the modem. I can get speeds of 200k/sec connecting to the server on my G3.

I got cable because the local dialup service sucks, and I live in the boonies, where cable is acutally available.

Results may vary among different cable providers, Some throttle the connection to slightly faster than dsl. There is probably a maximum of 40 people on this node, out in the boonies of Allen county.....So I doubt my connection is throttled much.

I would wait until some neighbors get cable, and see how fast and reliable it is. That's what I did.

Hey hey, I have a suggestion for a server - a Quadra 700. Get it all setup, then unplug the monitor, it will run without it fine. The thing has two nubus slots for a faster ethernet card(s), or you could get an AAUI adapter and use the built in ethernet. The things just as small (if not smaller) then a SE. Plus, add a FWB Jackhammer card, and WEEE!!!

Does it still filter Windows?
