I've started up a hotline server at 216.130.83.218 it might not be on all the time but it should be on at night and during the day. It is running on a PPC G3 500mhz with Mac OS X and the connection should be ok.

It's slow dsl, you'd get about 15kb/sec. but hey, it's the same $$$ as dial up!

um, speed was a real problem with my server,
another reason to close it
2.5-3k/sec maximum download/upload speed.

I also forgot to mention, THATS TOTAL ALL INCOMING AND OUTGOING TRAFFIC!
The fastest I've ever seen dial-up go is 5-7kb/s.
I'd hope that DSL service is cheap, because I wouldn't want to pay top-dollar for a slow DSL service.

Just be glad that you don't live in an area with crappy phone lines! In winter, I have to dial my modem down to V.34!

man, the dial-up from my provider is $24.
If I could get DSL for that I'd have it already.

Nothing's worse than mine. Even on my iMac's 56k, i only get 26.4k (this is NOT a typo, the real deal), althouth on a good day i get 31.2k.

Yeah, I been getting a lot of 26400 lately, sometime 28800 and last night a whopping 31400! I do get faster speeds in the summer, luckily!

V.34 = 33.6Kbps or lower

and, FYI: V.90 = 33.6Kbps - 53Kbps

and V.92 = faster upload speeds (up to 53Kbps) and TCP/IP-on-hold, but so far, no ISP's support it. The cost of upgrading end servers to support V.92 would hugely outweight the benefits and the V.92 userbase.

The handshake time for V.92 is only a few seconds, so it sounds really wierd...

For a more reliable connection, if you use os 9 or os X and connect to 216.130.83.218 as an ip server (network browser [os 9]) (or connect to server under the go menu. [os x]) you will get a dialog asking for a user name + password USER: 68kmla password: 68000 (same as newton)
