Due to the fact that i have a deceased 180c but with a good mobo, i've decided that its PLAYTIME!

On my hands, i have a working (i think, anyway...) PowerBook 180c logic board/daughtercard/cousin card assembly. I plan to get one of those Mini-DB 15 monitor adapter thingimagiggers. The thing is though: WTF should i hack this beastie into? Hmm an old radio or something maybe? Hmm........i might just be able to get MpegDec to run on there and play mono mp3s at a decent speed....

Either way, has anyone got any good ideas for what i should hack this beastie into?

Well,... Given your sig (which I like BTW), I think you should order a pizza, save the box and hack yourself a actual pizzabox computer.

nah! EVERYBODY thinks of doing that cardboard delivery box hack!
there's recent thread with a link to one some idiot PC hacker did over on fritter. the lid is propped open by a humongous PSU that coulda been from a freakin' AT! <rolleyes>

if you wanna do an MP3 machine, find another LCD and spread that, the guts and the keyboard out on a wooden pizza paddle and hang the sucker on the wall between two flat panel speakers!

if it won't do stereo, use timbuktu to run a headless stereo mac remotely to handle the sound end of things. it'd make one heck of a pizza motif input/display/sculpture/graphic

the other idea i kinda like would be to get one of the cheap, off-brand, flat, wall mountable CD/Tuner(alarm clock on some of them too) rigs and mount it inside that behind the clear CD window. if it's mono output only, the crappy sound of the donor system's speakers won't really matter at all and it'd LOOK awesome.

i really have no problem with it as a basic hack idea, so i (probably wouldn't waste the 105 on it, a few 40mm Bofors rounds'd be a lot more fun anyway <BAM!!!> <BAM!!!> <BAM!!!> ) think it'd be ok, but it might not be such a good idea for ML5, the PAF might "mistake" a hack like that for rubbish!

i guess i like taking things just a little bit too far™off on a tangent!

p.s. link to thread with PCizzaBox piccie links:

http://www.applefritter.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.pl?board=hacks;action=display;num=1023035693;start=6

btw: is this link too wide? i would think if it wraps much more than it does in this edit window it'd be too wide, but do we need to limit url's to one coulmn width at the 800 pixelwidth setting? dunno, i kinda like to see the path a link will take me before i leap, but if it doesn't work for everybody, i can play nicely everywhere but the links project. reading url's is an education pursuit in its own rite, IMHO!

ttfn,
jt

That 180 mobo must be quite compact. Seems fitting to install it inside a hollowed out copy of "Inside Macintosh". Volume V might just be fat enough. Or find some other fat/large book like one of the "Macintosh Bible" books. Or if you hack it for MPEG use, then find a coffee-table book on music.

(BTW, jt, followed your link and found out that you are reusing/reposting hack ideas )

Hack the mobo into a compact mac. You may need an LCD screen, and then also might have to make the space for the screen a bit wider by cutting some plastic.
It would be an awesome hack though.

All excellent excellent ideas people. However, what i was thinking, is that maybe I could abandon the beloved iMac LC II project, and do that hack with this mobo, instead of an LCII. This mobo is more compact, which means that i can do more work inside the tiny slot loader case.

So, whaddaya think?

Specs:

33 Mhz 68030 processor
10 megs RAM
2 80 meg HDs (I LOVE pulling apart external SCSI cases....)
12" RGB Colour Display (maybe bigger if room permits)
Authentic flower power iMac case
