Hey folks-
Just wanted to drop a quick note and let you all know that I'm still alive, despite my lack of posts this past week.
Turns out that I've got a (gasp!) girlfriend! And she's hot, too! Wooohooooooo! Plus, (perhaps best of all) she's got both a 'Snow' iMac and an adorable 'Tangerine' iBook, and an iPod!!!
Sigh.

Well, since we've only been going out for a few days, and no rescue ops have taken place yet, I can't say for sure.... But I must mention that she's quite the Mac fan, and she claims to think that my lov-, err, affection for old computers (Mac's in particular) is very cute- I guess I've got that 'nerd cool' thing going on!
Wow.

The best way to describe Jenn's views on the situation is as follows:

  • She hates Windows as much as anyone else here!
  • She is very impressed by Mac OS X, being somewhat of a Unix girl herself (her primary machine runs Red Hat 7.2).
  • She says that I have way too many Macs in my room, and that I need to trim down the collection... but I think, secretly, she kinda likes it.
  • And yes, she is willing to help with liberation ops!

So, there we have it!

Oh, and did I mention:

  • She's beautiful! (Or, at least I think she is...)
  • She actually has more than two brain cells to rub together, unlike some women I know...
  • We can actually connect and talk about things more profound than just the trivia of life - it's refreshing!
  • And have I said before that I love her to bits?

*watches as this thread dissolves into a litany of "Oh, isn't my girlfriend the greatest?" and "Oh, I wish I had a girl..." and gives praise to the Maker for putting him in the former category

This is a (pretty bad) pic from the birthday party where I met Courtney, last saturday.

Nah, she's got no prob with me showing her off to all my online friends- bit of an ego boost, I imagine. I must say, though, she's even nicer looking then in those pics- most of them didn't come out very well- I'm still learning how to get decent pics from my 'new' Kodak DC240... She said that she doesn't mind them being online, but if I really want to show her off the to entire internet, we should at least take some pics that do her justice!
Yeah, the redhead thing is very nice. I could make some terrible off-color jokes at this point, but, seeing as this is a family-friendly forum and all, and seeing as how I really like posting here and don't want to get dis-honorably discharged, I'll restrain myself.

It has been my experience, comrade, that it is exceedingly difficult to take a photograph that does a beautiful woman justice. Though sometimes, one can get lucky...

Umm... was "get lucky" a bad choice of words on my part? I think so.
*tries desperately to drive the images out of his head* Go away!

Congratulations, and here's hoping it all works out! I know from experience that sometimes chance meetings can have incredible effects. Jenn and I had only met three times when we started our relationship... and now we're coming up on twenty months together.

Damn straight! At the very least, we need one with commando-style face-paint (for reporting on 68k liberations), and I think I now need one with a big stupid grin plastered on its face, just to begin to convey the big stupid grin plastered on my face!

Again, the photo doesn't really do her justice - we'll have to do some more playing with the digital camera.

I just thought that I'd mention that Courtney (the girl that all this fuss is about) really is the greatest girlfriend on the planet!
She called me last night, all urgent-sounding, demanding that I come over to her house. I rushed over (just a couple blocks away, thankfully!), only to find that the 'emergency' was that she'd just gotten home with a shiny-new PlayStation 2 and Tony Hawk 3!
Oh, man, a hot chick who loves both Macs and videogames! How much better does it get?!

It's okay, you're not alone. I don't have a g/f either, and I probably won't until I'm 21 or 22 (I'm 16 now). The reason is that of the RAF.
Also that I look (and sound) like a geeky, scrawny troll.

It's been a while since I've had a g/f and it's not it's all cracked up to be. I like having money, spend my free time the way I want, not seeing stupid movies, and not hiding my computer geek side all the time.

Of course it also has it's bad sides that I won't get into.

My advice, for what it's worth: If you ever feel like you're missing out without a g/f, just date a hot, pyschotic (sp?) maniac and then you'll feel better everything, trust me. Or watch Love Stinks, and imagine that I lived that guys life.

I will agree with thelip in one regard: having a successful relationship is one hell of a lot of work - and yes, it can get rather expensive. I would argue, however, that the rewards can often be well worth the effort.

Basically, when it doesn't work, it's hell. But when it does, there's nothing better on this earth. (And when you can find a girl who actually shares your interest in matters technological... that can be really fun! Get back home from a liberation op... and celebrate.)

But if you're depressed and incomplete-feeling without a girl... well, basically, getting into a relationship now would actually make things even worse. Take the time on your own, convince yourself that you are a worthwhile person on your own (because you are!), and then just wait and see what develops. You may be surprised...

I know how this goes...
My last girlfriend had..... problems. She was very pretty, but quite insane (in a clinical sense), with acute MPD (multipul personality disorder), and several other mental illnesses that made it really, really tough to have a relationship. While I was totally commited to that relationship at the time, I now know that staying in it for so long (1.5 years!) was a really bad idea (for both of us).
As far as being lonely and feeling down, well, hell, I'm living proof that even the nerdiest of us gets a lucky break once in a while! Just don't give up hope, and don't stop looking (cornball, I know...)!

Even old Macs aren't really free... even ignoring the cost of parts, etc., there's still all the labour that we invest in them to make them useful... and all our efforts to gain the skills we need to do so...

Which brings me to my point: you understand what it's about, sir Penguin. All these people who assume that you just fall in love and then everything happens... umm, no. Yes, you can just fall in love, but even then it takes a bugger of a lot of work to keep the love alive. And as with our collections, it's at least partly the effort that makes the rewards so sweet.

OK, I see what you're all talking about. I'll get over it. Its just some of you seemed so lucky and a lot of people at school are bragging about how hot their g/fs are. I'm probably just jealous

i listen to ben folds five when i've had problems in the past. "Song for the Dumped" has special meaning for me, but i won't get into it. Ben folds is the man. going to see him live in 2 weeks for the second time this year!!!! WHOO HOO!!!

Yes the rewards for the hard work are worth it. I didn't want to get the wrong impression out. "Patience is a virtue" as i always say. (except for TI, he doesn't get any. )

Spaceboy, you sound like you're set. Congrats.

Yeah same here. When i was going out with my gf, i thought she was everything. Then she decided to broke up, and i was really depressed, and i was playing that song a lot. Then i finally decided to WAKE UP and realise that she is not what i thought she is. Now i just try and keep away from her. Oh well, what a waste of money and time that could have been spent on either someone better or a Mac...
