Ok, first off. Is there any difference between 10-BaseT and 100-BaseTX ethernet? other than speed? are they compatible?

second off: I need to find at least one ethernet card for my LC II to connect it to the network that I am planning on setting up later. I'd imagine that the card would have to be NuBus, but I don't know where to find one!

remember I don't do ebay.

I think 10-BaseT is the kind I'm looking for.
Although I'm not sure.
I've never tried this networking stuff before.

Other than speed, they are very compatible (same pinouts, same cabling, although 100-BaseT usually needs cable that is rated Category 5). Most 100-BaseT equipment (NICs, hubs, routers, etc.) can handle both speeds. I've got a mixed network or 10 and 100-BaseT stuff and it works quite well -- the presense of 10-BaseT equipment does NOT slow down file transfers between two 100-BaseT computers.

Happy Networking,

I want to get some internet connection sharing going so I can surf the internet with one of my "real" macs.
So, will just any old NuBus ethernet card do?
Or will I need a special Apple brand or something?

That's a bit trickier because it depends on how you are connected to the 'net (and what your ISP allows you to do). Some ISPs are persnickity about letting multiple computers share a single connection (and some enterprising software hackers have ways of dealing with those restrictions). How you make all this work depends on how you connect, is it dial-up or broadband? If its broadband, then it depends on the gateway (is it a standalone box with a LAN ethernet conenction or a NIC card installed in a PC?)?

I will be using a PC with Windows as a server because as you all know I have no mac modems. This IS over a dial-up connection too.

Hmmm... I know you can do it, but I will have to defer to the more knowledgeable members of the 68kMLA as to how exactly you do it. You might try google or articles in LEM.

I used IPnetrouter a while back on my 950 as a router for a few machines. One of the nice things was that I plugged my PB165 via serial and the 950 ran an macip server so i could connect my pb to the internet. I think i have some terms messed up, i just woke up. (PB-->serial--->950--->ethernet--->cable modem) If you had a spare mac laying around and could get a copy of that software. it might be worth your while to get a modem and use the mac to dial out and network the rest of your machines to that. Including your Pc. It was simple to set up. Just my 2 cents.

One other thing. I have an asante mcLC ethernet card. It was dead when i got it unfortunately. Which then made me look it up online to find out what the problem was. And there are quite a few people that have posted problems with this card around. It's identified by the machine, but my hub doesn't see the connection, nor does it get anywhere on the network. I don't recommend that particular card.

I also will warn you the farralon appletalk/ethernet (and similar) adapters do not support tcp/ip. Only appletalk. I don't know of anyway you can get internet sent over those. I guess you could try the Macip thing, but i never did.

The LC has a pds slot, not a standard nubus slot, so you have to find a pds ethernet card.

I don't do ebay either.

p.s. I might be able to find a modem i'll sell you for mac. I'll get back to you on that. Are you particular about speeds?

56k would be good. but I kinda wanted to do the networking.
I could try Weingarten Galleries. They seem to carry lots of old mac stuff. They didn't have any cd-caddys though...
I wonder if AnubisTTP knows about Weingarten?

Oh here's the other good news. Here's the link to the developer. It looks like the 68k version might be free now. I'm not sure. I just downloaded and will find out shortly. Their FAQ should answer all you need to know about what it can do. After I mentioned this I can't remember if it was this software that I used or.... dang.. i forgot what it was called. crap.. i'll try to remember later, i had found it on retromac68k.... (sniff) Anyway, check this out, it should work for you.

found it, as soon as i quit typing. Vicom's internet gateway, is what i ended up using because it had a wizard to set it up with... I know wizards are the work of the man, but i didn't know what i was doing at the time. here's three macs and a printers take. They make it a little easier to understand what goes one with this stuff...

p.s. vicom seems to have a pc version of internet gateway, as much as i hate the idea, i understand your situation.

OK, I've found a Windows Proxy server program.
Its called "AnalogX" It works between my Windows computers. I'll know if it will work with my macs when I can get an ethernet card for my LC.
