I pulled out a Seagate Barracuda 2.1GB HDD (working) from an old Unix server. Damn thing just refuses to get initialised on a Mac. Tried FWB, tried Silverlining. No luck. Seems there's some jumpers to fiddle around with before it can be setup for use with a Mac. Any ideas?

Yeah, here's what to do: find the model number on the drive itself and go to www.seagate.com. Search for that model number and you'll find a spec/config page.

First off, make sure the jumper(s) for the SCSI ID are different from the ID's of any other devices on the same SCSI bus.

Second, make sure parity and write protect are disabled. This usually requires no jumpers.

Third, make sure termination is enabled and set to get termination power from the bus, to the drive.

If it still fails, the drive is probably bad.

You say you got it off a Unix box... what about the block size jumper? Does that exist on a hard drive the same way as, say, a CD-ROM drive?
(I just remembered something from an installation guide to an old SCSI CD burner.)

i also have a seagate barracuda 2.1 gig drive. Smokes (literally, it gets really hot.) and it LOUD, but it's a nice drive. I was never apple to format it, until i tried gamba's superbooter 7.5 which came with HD SC Setup 7.3.5 (patched). It did the job for me.

here's the link.

I'll crack open the 950 with that drive when i can unearth it from the combination of parts and beer bottles. I'll find out the model and what i have the jumpers set to. I can't remember.

I have one of those in the hotline server...it is a "ST12550N" half height.

These drives seem to have termination voodoo, I always have to have some kind of terminated device along with the drive (external click-click drive, cd-rom, or hard drive), no matter what I set the jumpers or resistors to.

I had the same problem with formatting too, I finally got it to work using APS PowerTools
