i'm thinking 7.5.5 - won't 8.x be to much for it? I'm going to see it today, and maybe i'll buy it.

8.1 is the highest y'll go with the 040 - and 25-33Mhz 040s handle 8.1 just fine... depending how much ram and HD you have though, it may chew up a lot of the resources you have there :).

The bonuses of going with 8.1 are getting HFS+ for rather big drives, and...

ummm...

someone else will think of some I'm sure :D

Isn't HFS+ a PPC only thing?

Only booting-from-hfs+ - a 68k would need to boot into 8.1 from a normal HFS boot drive, but from there on could read any HFS+ volumes happily :)

It depends on how much RAM you have. Less than 32MB, I'd stick with 7.6.1 or 7.5.5. More than 32MB of RAM and there's really no reason not to use 8.1.

I bought my Quadra 840av recently and I too was Umming & arring over the o.s

I would advise you go for 8.1 it really does seem to be the most suited match for the computer; you could also try MagicMac. Download the demo.

Newer systems generally run better and for sure have better compatibility with useful software. If RAM permits, 8.1 for sure

well, the system has 24MB of ram and a stock 230mb HDD. i'm gonna try and scavange another 8 MB from a 660Av that has 32MB RAM (i'll just switch the SIMMs, both machines have all of their RAM slots full), as well as adding another HDD from a 6100/66 powermac i'll get for free with the Q840AV (don't know howw big it is, probebly a stock 500MB or 1GB HDD). the Q840 now have mac OS 7.6.something and it boots really fast... i think i'm just gonna do a fresh install of that system.
one more thing: is the RAM inside the Q840AV compatible with the RAM inside th Q660AV? and what about the RAM in the powermac 6100/66? and i've also noticed that the tray in the CD-ROM drive of the Q840Av doesn't come out (it seems to be the only flaw - but i've only checked it for a few minutes) can i replace it with the CD ROM from the 6100/66?

The ram should all be fine - they're all 72 pin FPM - and the bus speeds aren't so dissimilar that ram speed would be a problem. The same with the cdrom, if they're both tray-loading ones a swap should go just fine :). I'd say with 24mb ram, if the 7.6 that's on there works well for you - keep that going!. 8.1 needs around 120mb HD space too.

that's almost acceptble. how much ram does it take (right after a fresh reboot)? in that respect - the best i've got was with system 7.1 taking a little over 1MB.

How did you trim it down? 7.5.3 on my Quadra used to take up that much space!

I personally recommend 7.6.1 but I'm biased 'cause I have to run mine in 7.6.1 in order to take advantage of the DSPs on my Radius Thunder IV GX 1360. I also have a SpigotPower AV which gets more tempramental with 8.1. Although 8.1 is good on my machine, all 104MB RAM and all, I prefer 7.6.1 as it has that "liquid fast" feel. I t supports large volumes and my RAID 0 array so I'm happy

8.1 generally likes to have about 12 megs of RAM to itself. It runs okeh on 20 meg systems, and is beautiful on Macs with more RAM. I got the size of the System Folder down to about 50 megs by doing a custom install and installing *ONLY* what i need on that particular system.

on the iMac, 8.1 takes up about 14MBs, but that's with QT5, and alot of printer drivers and tons of fonts and all, I'm not sure who much it took on my performa, or on my Quadra

The easiest thing to do is turn off the printer drivers and network protocols that Apple gives you. My iMac always has ImageWriter drivers on it even when I custom install...

??? you can't even use an imagewriter on an iMac without a costly adaptor

I'm thinking of switching to 7.6.1 as the only OS on my Quadra 840AV. Lately, 8.1 has been having issues, especially with the SpigotPower AV card, even after two clean reinstalls.

Grrr....I really like having desktop pictures, too.

You should probably be running 8.6 on the iMac. 8.1 shipped only on the very first iMacs, and its USB support is really bad. Plus, 8.6 is all PPC code, and the Platinum interface is complete.
