It all started after installing 4 new sticks of 32mb memory. I was having problems getting the last bank to work...getting the sad mac icon.I removed the last stick and things worked alright. I persisted to try to get that last stick to work. Then all I know is my drive is no longer recognized. I use my Disk Tools to get started again and it prompts me to initialize my drive. So while I was able to boot up with the Disk Tools I figured I would continue with the memory installation. After re-seating stick 4 The Machine boots up on Disk Tools...no problem. The funny thing is(funny strange that is)when I looked to see what the is registered in the About this Mac box with regard to built-in memory...it states I have 131MB So I booted up on the CD and that registered 128MB. With a few scratches to the scalp I installed 8.0 on a secondary drive and via my 7300 and tried to use that to boot up the Quadra. Couldn't find the System Folder. I booted up again from DTools and I was able to mount the drive for a short time. When I tested the unmounted drives there was some problem related to the directory. Can anyone help me. I fell pretty useless at this point.

i'm clueless, but the first thing i'd probably do if faced with symptoms like that would be to look for a CUDA reset button.has the 840av got one? jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Not as I remember, I could be wrong. In circumtances where ther is no CUDA button I pull the PRAM battery and leave it unplugged from ALL power for 8 hours at least. It them forgets EVERYTHING in the PRAM, not just what Apple think it ought to forget Sounds quite serious to me. It sounds as if the SCSI Bus is playing silly foos (yes that was spelt as in "Stupid foo Murdock, he's gonna get us all killed - I love the A-Team, classic 80s action film in a good few weekly installments - Anyhoo I DIGRESS!!). If the PRAM Reset doesn't work I'd start suspecting the drive or the logic board. Thanks for your help: TiMacLover, Trash80toG-4, and SilconValleyPirate I figured I check-in and give you an update. Unfortunately not much has changed, however, I have more info.I did do the PRAM battery removal...I'm trying it again tonight for the full 8hrs that was recommended. I initialized the hard drive, several times. And with each format I tried 7.5.3 and 7.1, thinking that might be different than 8.1 that I originally had when this all started. Each time I was able to boot up, I checked the memory to see if the sticks were being registered. This all checked out O.K. But When I try to restart I get the ? Disk. With 7.1 loaded I removed one of the sticks and that worked fine. Its when that I have 128MB RAM in that it goes bonkers This the problem that is found on the disk every time: After successfully checking the extent Btree, extent file, it stops on catalog BTree and states: Keys out of order 4,5, Rechecking catalog file...Problems were found but can't repair them. So what is a Catalog BTree and why is it seem to be connected to may memory installation? HELP!

are all the SIMMs identical? (speed?)have you switched them around to see if they all give a problem in the same socket or if the troublesome SIMM moves the problem around to different sockets? have you got a smaller SIMM to test if a few Megs less will be ok with all the slots full? no real point to this other than getting another clue if possible, dunno! jt ™. Oh this reminds me of the exact same thing that happened to me. It required a full format and lots and lots of praying. I recommend prayers to be taken place indoors 3 days of the week and 3 days outside. The 7th day is for trashing the hdd which is probably the problem. My guess is that the drive is worn out. When you install the systems, data is being corrupted and when you use it, your system loses it's mind. 1s get mixed up with the 0s and everything goes crossed eyed. If the 840av was used as a full-time capture box or used all the time, the drive might not be reliable anymore, especially if it had been used while being horribly fragmented. How much use has your drives seen? Just my take.
As far as the secondary drive that you referred to, make you sure that the scsi is set properly, that may not be your whole problem, but it might be why the drive is not mounting. Zapping the pram after installing new hardware is always a good idea too. And make sure it's a universal install. I've never installed a system from a ppc anc swapped it to 68k, are there libraries that don't get installed on ppc that would be on ppc or visa versa? That's it, i'm out of ideas. _______________________ Sgt. Thelip Heavy Weapons Specialist 950 division Liberated Macs: 12 Edited by - thelip on 16 Jun 2002 22:30:50 |
