I managed to crack open one of those ses (no display but was hoping that the mother board was still good.) with the stripped threads. I used a dremel tool and cut all around the front plastic where the screw mounts and just cut it off. while doing that, i nitched my thumb and took out a huge chunk of it. Luckly, i cut deep enough that i think i cut the nerve so it really isn't that sore. Anyway, after wiping the blood off the case, i pull out the mother board and hdd/superdrive chassis and installed it in one of the sad SEs and wha-la! It's up and going without a hitch. 4 meg ram, superdrive and 40 meg hdd. I'll be cleaning this case and putting it with my working classic, now if i could get that stupid 512k working.

I think we all have our fair share of battle scars from opening/cracking/manuevering inside 68k cases! Glad to hear the blood was worth it!

Did i mention the time i zapped myself with the inverter cable on my PowerBook 145B?

Either way, great to hear you finally have one working. Btw, before you junk the dead one, pull the CRT. It may still be good, and those things still hold some value.

the crt, might be working, but i've got 5 compact macs in my room right now. I have to eventually get rid of them, i'm not too concerned about losing it.

the other day, i managed to get my fingers on both leads to my computers power plug while unplugging it before a lightning storm. It shocked the piss out of me. We should start a thread of battle wounds. I think that'd be fun. Let's keep it going here.

Just think of it as your "Red Badge of Courage". I have my share of cuts and bruises from opening up cabinets and such. But most of my more serious injuries come from PC cases. I like the old Quadras since they are a snap to work on (literally).

I stuck a flat-blade jewler's screwdriver in my finger while I was fixing my iBook the other day. I have a large gouge out of the back of my hand where I caught the metal frame in my 630. I'm a wreck at the moment. I also have emotional scars from my exams but that's a different kettle of oysters.

stepping on an upside-down DIP-IC has gotta be right up there! didn't happen to me, but i knew somebody who did it.

his advice was: DON'T try it!

I stepped on a corner of a peecee case in my garage, and it took a huge chunk out of my foot, definitely worse than stepping on an IC.
(the case was dismantled, because it was slated for the spud gun treatment)

The only time I hurt myself working on a mac is while soldering, as mentioned above. I hold the wires, without considering how well copper conducts heat.

I cut open my thumb on the edge of a 5400 motherboard backplane. I cut my hand while snapping apart several corrupt floppy disks (see, floppy disks are evil)!

Not mac related, but soldering related -
when soldering conductors onto 2.5 mm miniplugs (yes, two point five) I became so enraged at the inability of the wire to "stick" that I ignored all the pain signals and crimped them with my fingers. FRICK that brings back painful memories, I shoulda sued Casio...

Yep, done it more than once, I'm totally inept with a soldering iron.

I did that fixing my iBook PSU connector. The central core wire is ok as it has a plastic sleeve but the braided ground part is bare and conduts heat far too well
