I have a UMAX S-6E SCSI scanner which has been working OK up until recently. But now when I try to scan, all i get is a black image. The only possible reason I can think of for this is that when I had the cover off (for cleaning) I did a test scan and that produced a black picture. Which I think is fair enough considering that there was nothing for light to reflect off. With the lid put back on ..... all i get is black. Did I break my scanner?

dunno for sure, but sounds like i/o ain' doin' one or the other!

if you didn't break the light source and the scanner acts like it oughta be scanning in some data, open it up and see if you knocked the flex cable loose on one side of the connection between the logic board and the ccd carriage.

thas' the onliest thing that pops up in the ole noggin' for now, comrade!

When you say "black", do you mean: 1) an extremely dark version of the image, 2) no image, just near-zero streaks, or 3) all the pixels are really zero?

<dumb question mode>
Does the light turn-on? The scan-head move? The blinken-lights blinken?
</dumb question mode>

Besides the flexcable, you might look and see if the thing has any little photosensors that help regulate light level. And, if that scanner has any diagnostic or auto-calibration software, you might try running that. You might also try removing the scanner's preferences file (also look for scanner-related files that changed the day you id the test) in case that covers-off test scan created an anomolous set of calibrations/scanner setup prefs.

Good luck,

hmm, When I say black I mean that the entire area that I scan is black. No image, no streaks..nothing but black. I've trashed the prefs, and re-installed software but unfortunately there are no diagnostics tools. The light comes on and the scan head moves... the only thing I havn't looked for is photoelectric cells/sensors so I'll do that when I get home tonite.

cheers

Well, I think I'm going to have to scap the scanner. Pity coz it was a really good one till it died [:-(] I pulled it apart and found the circuit board with the photoelectric on it, but I really have no way of testing it. Everything else functions fine. so I am fairly certain that it is not anything to do with the SCSI (or data transfer) side of things. I alsi installed a new System on a test disk, then installed fresh scanner software....and still just black! [:-(] [:-(]

So if no one has any ideas in the next day or two...it's getting trashed.

bummer.
