I have my Quadsra 840av & am very pleased, barring a few minor tweaks nessasary.
I am now after a portable machine in order to cart with me on holiday & the like. My mouth drooled over the 550c I saw through everymac.com.

Is this the best 68k mac laptop?

Am I likley to get one(how rare are they)?

Is there a better 68k portable?

How much do they weigh?

what size screen?

hang on I'll leave it there and go and do my own research.

The 550c weighs 6.8 lbs. and has a 10.4" screen (sorry, I don't have the metric equivalents).

I've only ever seen one 550c on eBay, and I've been looking for them there for at least 3 years. The one that I did see was in bad shape, it had a dead HDD and a broken screen hinge, and it still sold for about US$450.

the ibooks are all g3s. i don't know much about the 68k powerbook selection. My 165 doesn't really fit any of your "wants", but i like it. I would recommend it.

I would say a 190cs or 540c.

Yeah.

Practicality award -> 190cs
Coolness award -> 540/550c

The 540c is an extremely cool machine, and is one of the fastest 68k PowerBooks, but the 190 uses cheaper, bigger IDE hard drives, which are easier to find in case you either want to upgrade, or your internal drive dies. Also, seeing as though it uses the same expansion bay devices as the PowerBook 5300, 3400 and Kanga G3, which opens the door to internal CD ROM drives, zip drives, and other interesting and cool devices. Also, if you get sick of the passive matrix screen, it is extremely easy to remove it and install a PowerBook 5300c active matrix display, which is much better.

The 540c, on the other hand, is a faster machine, has an active matrix display preinstalled, and has room for two batteries installed at the one time, therefore doubling your work time on the road. However, the "intelligent" batteries used with the 5xx series tend to go a bit funny, and you need to download an application made by VST called EMMpathy to ressurect them.

Sorry my information about the 540c leaves a little to be desired, but when it comes to PowerBooks, my main specialty is the 1xx series, seeing as though i've never used a 5xx machine before. Both machines have their advantages over each other, but seeing as though the 190 is cheaper both to obtain and to maintain/upgrade, it would be my choice. Have fun, and get back to us with your final decision!

The expansion bay on the PB190/5300 is narrower than the one on the 3400C. Hence, no CD-ROM drive.

I've got a 190cs that I like quite a bit. Here are a few other differences between the 190cs and the 540c
* 190cs has two PCMCIA slots, the 540c has none
* the 540c has built-in AAUI-15 ethernet, the 190cs has no ethernet (big negative on the 190cs)
* 190cs has optional IRDA ("optional" = impossible to find)
* the 190cs is 6.3 lb vs. 7.3 for the 540c (read heavy vs. very heavy)
* although the 190cs has an internal IDE HD, it also has a SCSI interface (but the HDI-30 connector means the cable is not easily available)
* Alien is right, the expansion bay of the 190cs (with its removable floppy drive) is too narrow for a CD-ROM

Of course, if you want something lighter, you might look at the Duo 280c (or other Duos). At 4.8 lbs (but no floppy, and few ports), it could be a great little machine for the weight-conscious traveller.

Happy Hunting,

g4from128k

You can't have a cd drive on a 540c ether, ethernet is big for the 540 but still you have to get a AAUI which is a tad slower, but you can get scsi to ethernet adapters on eBay for 190cs for onyl $10, there are a lot of SCSI cables for 190s and 540s on eBay. A 540c can have a PC card slot with a PC card cage which are very rare to find and if you do find one they are very high in $$$.
