just google the chip ID, if you don't get any hits, try just the numbers and a few letters, if you get too many dumb number hits, add more of the letters back until you get a hit on chipdirectory or another site with the part listed.

the questions and explanations in the linux newsgroups are a goldmine of info.

p.s. oops, forgot to say that SRAM is normally used for cache on desktop systems, a lot of laptops use it for main system memory.

i don't think so, i think most apple branded peripherals are OEM'd by other companies.

No. I have a Presentation System too, and it is a Focus Enhancements box. There was no Apple Presentation System. They simply repackaged Focus's product in a swell Cupertino package.

For the month that I have been here I have ignored this thread because it was so f r e a k i ng long but now i read it )it took me 3 hours to read it all. IMHO: Timac should have not of taken the job of going to get the equipment, it was just a strain on friendships, This thread has already discarded of GG and it sounds as though Timac will leave soon . Although I cannot force you to do this, I encourage you to make up, It was sortta fun at the begining of the thread but it just became bitter, I suggest that you guys start a new thread, as to this one is long enough, you would sort this problem get your equipment and be done with this faster. In fact if you all state what you want to me, i can keep track off it since I am impartial, since I have no chance of getting a thing of this at all. If you give me the liberty I will create a complex web page dedicated to this and it will make shure that this will be resolved, everyone will get thier stuff and TiMac will no longer have TONES of stuff jammed in his house. i believe he did a LOT of work finding out and sorting a lot off the junk there. So why don't you all close your eyes take 5 deep breaths and think about what you really want. There should be a lot to spread around.

In an effort to get get things rolling for all of us that hasn't recieved our parts yet, I suggested that TiMac leave the option to send COD. Of course, if you don't have the ability to write a check or get a money order, then the old way of doing it (send Ti money, he ships stuff) would have to be done.

I only suggest doing the COD thing because it is a little faster on TiMac's end (he doesn't have to wait 3 days for the money to make it from PayPal to cash in his hand), and you don't have to pay until you have recieved equipment. (Power Mac 9500 comes to mind... rest in piece)

Today I talked to a friend of mine that just got his 2 year degree in electronics (the real title is something technical). He looked at the damaged freakentosh and had a few thoughts:

!) he thinks there were about 4 out of the 10-11 leads that were gone.
2) his thought was that it might be easier to completely remove the 601 and add a newer one in it's place. He was concerned about how it was damaged and what the force could have done to the processor itself.
3) as far as the questionable areas for roms, he might be able to mount sockets to the boards were the existing solder is and that would allow me to pull roms from other 7200s and place them in the sockets without a more permanent bond.
4) before i told him it was a suspected prototype his first comment was that the motherboard was constructed mostly by hand.
5) unfortunately he doesn't have the tools right now to work on it, nor does he forsee them in the near future so i've got a few names to look into around town that he recommended.

I'll keep you all posted on any updates.

I think this thread has gone far enough. Nerves and tempers are getting frayed, and it's only a matter of time before things really go down the tubes. So, I'm going to lock it and perhaps either start a new thread to keep track of the BIG BOX distribution, or Jeremy and everyone involved can just take it to email/IM.

Sorry for the incovenience, but we just don't need this kind of banter going on.

Hello all. Where would an appropriate place be to post technical information regarding the PowerExpress logicboard? I know it's on topic for this thread but I'm sure many of you would rather seperate a technical discussion from the details of this transaction.

As a side note to those who won the auction: Congratulations on a great find!

PowerExpress and MacOS X

A bit of good news. MacOS X contains the proper low level Darwin drivers to allow you to boot OS X as well as the proper NVRAM settings for OpenFirmware to boot properly.

The bad news, MacOS X does not have drivers for the onboard video. If there are not ROMs on the boards adding a ROM from a PowerMac G3 beige may not help here. It's doubtful if the drivers for the Cirus Logic video would be in the G3 ROM. This may also be a problem for other motherboard features.

Yes, the low level drivers exist, but according to Apple, they never worked right after the inital builds of Mac OS X. There were signifigant numbers of conflicts that kept coming up, due to the differences of Old World and New World architechures. As far as I know, there has never been support for Cirrus Logic Video to date.

Theory: If a PCI video card was put in, Mac OS X should run no problem. I will test this theory when I upgrade my video card in my G4.

I am putting this request up too find out what has happened to the 3rd Power Mac 6400 tower (which IIRC had no motherboard and was missing other stuff). I have a friend from college that has a Power Mac 6400/180 logicboard, PSU, etc. Everything except the case.

I am asking everyone to find out if there is a claim on the 3rd 6400, which is basicly empty, and if there isn't, would we be willing to let him in to purchase the tower for $15-$20 (w/o shipping)?

Soooooooo...

I was thinking about this thread while I was gone this weekend with my youth group kids. What's the story? I hope i'm NOT (i just noticed that the word NOT was missing, man i looked like a jerk... sorry bout that) stirring ashes, but i was curious if everybody had their stuff and if there was any luck with the pex machines yet? The past month I've been insanely busy so i might have missed where it was talked about.

On a side note, i'm going I hope to be buying a correct cable to try out this tv tuner card. I'm excited. If I can get it to work, i've been thinking of what box to put it in. It's about 4"x6". If anybody knows of an official apple container that size, i'd appreciate some ideas.
