can it be done?
are there external CD-ROM drives that i can attach to my "classic II" via it's external SCSI port? that would give me quite a lot of portable storage... 650MB can hold a lot of 68k games! :-D

Yes there are. Any external CD ROM with an external SCSI connection should work. This includes drives made by Apple and third parties, provided you use the correct driver. There are many drivers for non-Apple drives available which give great performance, but old 2x SCSI CD ROMs are cheap enough these days for you to grab an old AppleCD 300 or something at a bargain basement price, which would work without a problem at all on your Classic II, and would eliminate compatibility problems altogether, as an Apple manufactured drive such as the AppleCD 300 is fully compatible with the CD ROM drivers that are supplied with Apple and come with most versions of the Mac OS.
