well, today i picked up 4 compact macs, 3 se, and 1 512k. None are working. 2 SEs give me a sad mac at startup and one doesn't display anything and the 512k is really scary. It ticks when i power it up, with no display. i was really bummed. I'll try to get the two SEs that display something some life, but i doubt that they'll work. I also got a IIci for my cahce card that i already had and 4 nubus ethernet cards, and a 15in multiscan display. wish me luck with the compacts, i'm entering no-man's-land.PM 8500 OC g3 420mhz (Daisy) (3) Quadra 950's Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130 |

A ticking 512k! LOL Actually that sounds like a dead PSU to me. Does anyone know if the PSU from an SE could go inside a 512k? If so you might be able to do a PSU transplant (= liver transplant??) and get that 512k back on active duty. Of course, as has been said many a time in these forums, be very very very careful of the video circuitry. There be some extremely angry electrons inside there that would like nothing better than some fresh meat!Re the SEs, is it possible that all they lack is RAM -- did the prior owner strip them of critical cortical material? You might get an inkling of the problem from http://www.cc.ic.ac.uk/helpdesk/apriori/73.2292.html. Good Luck, it sounds like a nice haul, especially that IIci g4from128k ------------ -- The Liberated: PB 190cs, Outbound 2030E, Performa 450 -- The Originals: 128k, Mac II -- The Contraband: 7585e & 8575G3 FrankenMacs, Pismo PB, G4/450 AGP Tower mit Cinema Display |

ok, the error was a frightening 00000001 which is a bad rom on both MACS!! i can't get the other se open due to a stripped screen under the handle, which i thing was already stripped. I think that board my be working but the display is bad. As far as PSU for the 512k and se, it might be possible, but i'm not sure if i'm the one to do it. I'll looking into it though, maybe. I have to get a keyboard and mouse for it first.PM 8500 OC g3 420mhz (Daisy) (3) Quadra 950's Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130 |

Bad ROM Yikes!!! Reminds me of that 68k joke application that splashed up an ominous dialog box "Erase ROMs?" with "OK" as the only possible response. Are the ROMs actually installed on those SEs (or maybe someone here has a spare set of SE roms?) If the ROMs are in there, you might try pulling them and reinserting them to make sure they are in good electrical contact with everything.Good Luck, g4from128k ------------ -- The Liberated: PB 190cs, Outbound 2030E, Performa 450 -- The Originals: 128k, Mac II -- The Contraband: 7585e & 8575G3 FrankenMacs, Pismo PB, G4/450 AGP Tower mit Cinema Display |

there are four torex screws and the case just slids off, incase they don't, i use a big fat flathead screw driver and pry them apart. If they work, i'm gentle, if they don't, i'm not. PM 8500 OC g3 420mhz (Daisy) (3) Quadra 950's Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130 |

Regarding that stripped screw under thelip's SE handle: sometimes you can loosen a stripped torx screw with a regular screw driver or allen head wrench of just the right size (a very tight-fitting tool can sometimes grab on to the remaining torx nubbins). Of course this trick can also result in further stripping of the screw head and/or mangling of the end of the screw driver or wrench. As they say, your mileage may vary, problems may appear smaller than they actually are, limit one stupid idea per posting, ... g4from128k ------------ -- The Liberated: PB 190cs, Outbound 2030E, Performa 450 -- The Originals: 128k, Mac II -- The Contraband: 7585e & 8575G3 FrankenMacs, Pismo PB, G4/450 AGP Tower mit Cinema Display |

actually, it's not the head, it's the threads inside. i imagine i'll just saw the case apart up there. the display seems to be busted so all i need is the motherboard on the other end. PM 8500 OC g3 420mhz (Daisy) (3) Quadra 950's Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130

i don't understand what you mean. if the threading in the hole is stripped and the screw turns without extracting itself, the case should pop open just fine.is there a metal thread insert that's broken loose and is spinning free with the screw while holding the case closed? a large drill bit or a piece of metal tubing with a burred end might be an easy way to "saw thru" that part of the case inside the screw well if you have anything handy to chuck into a drill. jt ™. .

Easy fix for the 512, theres a little voltage screw thing on the back of the analog board. turn it slightly until the clicking stops. That fixed mine, Geoff

There actually is a 'case-cracking tool' for compact Macs (I have one, somewhere), like a reverse pliers (you squeeze, two spade tips open). Works better than a screwdriver, as it doesn't damage the case. Also see the website and read the page on 'opening a CRT'--not that you want to, but it tells how to discharge the CRT and so avoid electrocuting yourself. /Mr Lynn Curator of: SE (6.0.4), SE w. 020 accelerator (6.0.8), SE w. no HD, IIfx (7.1), IIci (bad HD); plus various PPCs in family (blue G3/350 is main Mac these days). |

awesome, which direction do i turn it? As far as what happened to the ses, I the one that i couldn't open was weird. I could turn the screw without a problem but it wouldn't come out, no matter what i did. I'm usually very careful when opening cases but in this situation i took a dremel tool and carved all around where the screw would go into in the front plastic and then just ripped them apart. I took the mobo out and used it's pieces for a different SE. I didn't discharge the CRT, but i was VERY careful. I'm still here to tell the story so take that for what it's worth. _______________________ Sgt. There should be a image above the knob, that looks kind of like a volume know (smaller to bigger) Turn it what ever direction is smaller. This should work. I discovered this playing with a Plus. As far as the sad macs, try removing the battery, or putting in different ram, Usually sad macsa in Ses are something on the motherboard. Geoff

word of advise to all 68k rescuers, search for a copy of The Dead Mac Scrolls, it is an awesome book for AIOs and early macs, it covers everything from "My mac is bonging oddly" to "My mac makes a sizzling noise and emits smoke", and tells you what part has failed, and tells you how to replace it!I had one for a ling time, but it got taken away from me :( CCC Master Sergeant Specialty: Camoflague (Mack Hacking) 68ks Liberated: Too many according to my parents |

hey lip! I need some ethernet cards. are they 10-baseT? I wuld be really glad if you could part with 2 of them, or even 3! lynksys routers annoy me, so I'm making my mac II the household router, and need 2 cards, and I'm gonna make my IIsi an FTP server (once I get a large SCSI HD)THNx "that is the most god awful stench I have ever smelled! it's burining my retenas!"
