An iMac's Firmware sound when updating it is the same as the Mac Plus's startup sound

cool, I just wish that there was a way to change the startup sound, or at least put one in after the G3 chord

Yeah. The 'Bong" that my iMac makes was nice at first, but its waaay overused. They've used it since the release of the first PCI Power Macs in 1995. Its about as drab as a beige generic PC case now. I would kill to replace it with a TAM boot sound, a NuBus PowerMac boot sound, a SE/II/PowerBook 100 boot sound, or even the one that is made by Quadras and later LCs, or the one made by PPC Performas. Of course, i can't get enough of the bong sound made by Classic IIs and LCs.

But whatever Apple, please get rid of the current "bong" sound. You've overused it waaaay too much.

Didn't they change it somewhere between PowerMacs and G3s? I coulda sworn...

Anyway, did you know that when you start up the Classic Compatibility Layer (MacOS.app) in OS X Server (version 1.x) it makes a very non-G3 sounding startup chime?

Somewhere I downloaded sound files of all the Mac startup bongs and chimes of doom. Nothing freaks people out like putting a system 7 sound file of the chimes of doom in the startup items folder. I can not for the life of me remember where I downloaded them from though. I guess it is time to upload something to the hotline server...

I used to have all the ones up to the early PPCs - I think it was from the MacWorld Mac Secrets CD.
