I wonder if it was smart for the seller to sell those two items together. They really have little to do with each other, right? Aside from model compatibility, I guess. My dad just bought a PM 5400, which has slots for AV and TV Tuner cards, but it's already got an AV card. I would have sold those things seperately. Got a use for both, jt?

the tuner in my 6360 doesn't work, so i guess i might have one extra video input card, but i use it for a VCR hookup almost exclusively and now i also use it as a display for my Laser 128. this'll be my fourth set of Tuner/Video Systems and will go into the box from the original set as a backup for the other three. the kid just about had a heart attack when he thought his had died. one set is earmarked for my Sharp word processor hack.

They originally came either in a set or as seperate items, the guy still has 19 left, so you can probably get a set!

The TV Tuner requires the AV card to be present to work I think, at least that is the gist I get from the LC 630 service manual. What is more these two cards came boxed as an Apple kit for the machines he lists. I have just paid a totally earthshattering £35 GB for one of these kits, needless to say I feel a bit sick now. Mind you the shipping over to the UK would probably have made up for the fact they only sold for $14 each (£10). Either way I bouoght it off a good seller and I've not paid yet so there is time to haggle. I'm not bitter

The remote is also part of tha Pack which, IIRC, came with Avid Videoshop (3.0 AFAIK) Teletext support and a fitting/user manual.

yup, i bought that kit new back in the day. the second kit came in a second hand mac and the tuner stopped working one day. i've tried it in combination with two or three macs and video cards and i think it's just plain DEAD!

the kit did come with Videoshop, but i'd need to pull the box out to check the rev. if you need to know, i will.

wtf is teletext support?

It's 3.0, I got the kit Monday and it's all complete. I now have a 6300 powered 630 I can turn on and watch TV on from the other side of the room :).

It's a system, developed in Europe IIRC, that allows you to bring up pages of information on text format on a TV screen, apparently it's written kinda like HTML but for TVs :). It's been around here since the early 1980s. It may not be supportred in the US, do you hav esuch a thing over there?

cool, did yours come with the credit card sized or the little brick remote? whenever the kid boots his 630/now 6290 with the credit card sized remote his friends eyes bug out! have you tried to get it to control music CD's yet?

dunno if we've got anything like teletext offhand, have you got NTSC or PAL video standards in the UK?

in uk they use either PAL or SECAM. can't remember which one exactly, they both work, but one would display only in black and white if it was the wrong one. NTSC wouldn't work at all.

i remember seeing teletext over at a friend's house like 12 years ago and i thought it was cool.

i got a standart looking remote with my kit when i got it a few years back for about $100. i wish i got the credit card size one...

It's a mini-brick, I would probably lose the credit card sized one almost stright away anyway

I have this trick where I leave my monitor on (it goes into low-power standby if there is no signal) and plug my 630 into the second video channel. I can them flick it on at 7:00am to watch the world cup games Sadly the PRAM battery is dead and I'm too much of a skin-flint to buy a new one so if I set it to come on automatically it only works until I unplug it. It's kinda like those early digital disply VCRs that had sophisticated timing and scheduling data but forgot it all when you unplugged it.
I haven't tried the CD Player, the sound system is only 22KHz so it sounds crappy, a bit of a shame as I was going to use it as an MP3 player . Anyone know if any LS PDS Sound Cards for LCs are 44.1KHz and work in a Performa 6300CD??

We are on PAL, which is a bigger screen size but inferior refresh I think. Whoever it was who said the picture was a bit pixilated was right, it is kinda crappy looking on a 17" screen, esp. the score display in football (soccer) games. Nevermind, it was cheaper than an 18" TV!

i put the entire system in the kids room on a powerkey, so the input from the remote turns on the speakers, monitor and even the PC depending on the position of the power switch.

i know you're probably not supposed to do it, but i built a PRAM Battery Pack out of an extra replacement PC (AA cells) CMOS Battery Pack. it worked fine, i think all i had to do was jumper the contacts for the fourth AA cell to get it down to the 4.5v spec of the original, dunno if the connector was compatible, i might have grafted on the one from the original PRAM bat, it was a LOOOOOOOONG time ago!.

well the LC PDS rev of the PAS 16 will probably fit, but it's been no joy on getting the NuBus rev to work with the PPC in the 2300c to date. if you can find one, you might well consider upgrading to a 68k mobo!

Never The Same Color Video looks a little pixellated on the 17" and on my old 20" and even the new 21" in the shop, but only from distances for doing word processing etc. from a more comfortable chair just a few feet away, even on the 21" CRT the 640x480 video output from a VCR (my tuner doesn't work) looks far better than NTSC from the same source on the 19" television in the shop. eventually the old 20" will replace the TV on my rolling media cart in the shop and it'll have a 630/vidsys and probably an AMD box with an All In Wonder Card too.

I was wondering. I have 2 64MB SIMMs in there that only work in a 630 an a 475 (to the best of my knowledge) and they don't like my 6300 board. I have the original 630 board under my bed and to be fran I don't think I'd even suffer a speed drop, the 100MHz 603e is a frankly rubbish CPU. The only MINOR flaw in your plan is I mentioned MP3s and you replied with a 68k solution. The two don't mix as we all well know.....

That's not true. It's the really crappy design of the 6300. See http://www.lowendmac.com/tech/x200.shtml for details. My 5400 with a 603e performs just fine.

quite a few of the comrades have had good results with markymark's MPegDec player for 68k, it would be VERY interesting to see how well that would work with the PAS 16. if you have the 68040 equipped quadra version and clockled it to 40Mhz as the maniac did (IIRC), that 630 might make quite an entertainment center.

if you wanted to go with some decent contraband, you might give the PCI equipped rev of the Q630 a try. a PCI sound card whould work wonders, i would think. the proc worked well for me and was a joy after i popped a 400Mhz Sonnet G3 with a 1 Meg L2 cache in that slot!

if you have the PC compatible rev of the 630, the soundbleaser daughtercard was supposedly a MUCH better solution than the mac side of the equation. i never really tried it and i don't know if the remote would still work, but that may be one more angle to explore.

If you ever wanted to know, you can also use Sony stereo/CD player remotes on the 630, as well as Sony TV/Video remotes. Dad has a Sony Hi-Fi, which he never uses the remote with. Several months after i got the 630, i decided to claim that remote, and the following buttons work:

Play, Stop, Back skip, and foward skip buttons These do their obvious tasks when used with the 630. If you press the Stop button while there is an audio CD in the drive which is not playing, the Mac ejects the CD.

Volume controls These buttons also do their obvious tasks

"CD" function selector button For some odd reason, this button launches and quits Apple Video Player. Very useful for when i want to watch The Castle, Titanic or ID4 but can't be bothered to go to the Apple menu...

Speaking of which...

I bought one from this auction, too. Since I only need the tuner and remote (for a 5500 that already had the AV card), does anyone need a spare of the AV card (composite/S-video inputs)?

Call it $10 shipped from NJ to anywhere in the US.

hmm... I need automation and playlists and things. SoundJam is still the only OS 7-9 player I have found that is any use for managing a large collection.

That requires *another* PPC logic board (which I'm not likely to find over here) and a 6360 PSU to give it enough oompphh to run a CPU upgrade. Not to mention the CPU upgrade of course

No I don't.

Thanks. I have a Sony MD Deck in my room, I'll give the remote a shot

Don't split the kit up if it came boxed. It''ll be worth a lot more if you sell it on as a complete kit with both cards and the remote...
