The seller gives on idea of what speed it is, what disks it writes or whether it is external or internal. It'd be well worth finding out. It really isn't worth buying anything faster than 4x if you are using it on a 68k Mac, even an 840av Unless you have a SCSI PowerMac you could also use it on.

Toast 3 works on a 68k Mac AFAIK.

Well, I ended up paying about $40 for the Yamaha CDR-100t that I use on my Quadra and my 7500. It's the first 4x burner ever made, and rock solid...that thing will probably still burn disks when my Quadra goes up in smoke!

The Yamaha CDE100 is essentially the same as mine, 4x write, 8x read, however I believe it's caddy-loaded as opposed to tray-loaded, like mine. So, either make sure the seller is including a caddy or get a hold of one elsewhere.

The current price is a little high...but it is definitely a good drive. If you're willing to pay that much (and especially if you live close to the seller), go for it!

ty for the replies, cinemafia is so comprehensive.

It is caddy loaded and seller says caddy is with it. Seller will provide me with scsi cable for £2.

What would I need to make this drive work?
can I use a through connection for the power supply? to save me having loadsa plugs.
can I listen to cd's like using a normal drive?
How long would it take to record a cd?

well, first you would need either an extra 5 1/4" drive in your machine (what is the mac you plan on putting it in?). Second, if you have a spare power plug in the machine, chances are good that you can power it, or you can get a y-adapter from radio shack for 5 bucks. The cd burner should operate as a normal drive, i have a 6x yahmaha drive and it does fine. If all else fails, you can get an external scsi box and put it in there. As far as I know about speeds, this is how I figure, I could be wrong though:

say you want to burn a 60 minute cd.
1x burn = 60 minutes
2x burn = 30 minutes
4x burn = 15 minutes
32x burn = 1.9 minutes
(these are rough estimates)

there's a few other things to keep in mind like transfer rates, (external scsi will be slower than internal), what other processes are going on, how much ram, etc. I've never tried burning with 68k. my first burner was a 2x on the family pc many years ago. cost $500 and was a hi-val, so you knew it was quality. When i could afford a cd burner with my macs, it went straight to the 8500

Just to clarify, is this drive internal or external?

i don't know what anybody else used/uses, but i had a lot of success with the Philips Omniwriter external. when CD-RW's first broke the $500 barrier i bought the PC version and Adaptec's Toast for the MAC and never had any real problems after i got the 3.5.7 upgrade with the proper drivers for it. it ran really well, but with a few glitches under 3.5.5 IIRC, dunno.

i don't think i've ever had a Mac that wouldn't work with it for reading CD's and i've been able to boot many of them from it too. i don't think i've tried to burn from very many of them though, but it definitely worked with the 630 and Duo 230. that was a LONG time ago and it's still going strong, the one that came in my 466 died under warranty!

jt . .
