This is probably old news for you guys, but I was watching SJ's little act at the launch of xServe, when he started talking about 'Jaguar'... OS X 10.2. One of the features he was touting was 'inkwell'..."probably the worlds best handwriting recognition system... from you know where".

Wow.

Now this got me thinking...(yep, it takes a bit) ...handwriting recognition would have to be very much a niche application when running on any of the current lineup... only useful for owners of Graphic Tablets... So why would they go to the significant effort of porting it to X? Unless they're going to be putting touch screens on the next round of powerbooks, I can only think of one other reason.

What do you folks think?

Cheers!

I hope so! I use a Psion 5MX as my ultraportable and my wife's Palm III. Problem is, when I switch to any of our Powerbooks, I always want to touch the screen to select stuff. Now, I'll have an excuse for having smudgy Powerbook screens.

Because:
a) It is not that significant an effort.
b) Macintoshes are widely used in the graphics industry. Not having to switch from a tablet to a keyboard to just input a few words can be a big timesaver for Photoshop pro's.
c) Apple may want a piece of the forthcoming big "tablet PC" market. Although that alledgedly booming market has been forthcoming for a few years now and I'm not seeing many succesful tablet implementations. Of course, that could all change if Apple put their weight behind it and finally get it right.
d) The iPod's OS and CPU are capable of much, much more than playing MP3's and accessing a couple of vCards. Of course, were Apple to make the iPod more of a true PDA, they'd surely face an uphill battle against the reputation of the Newton.

Well, when I first heard of the iPod I thought it might be a PDA, that would take the Newton's place. I figure that Apple called it the iPod because the nome offers quite a bit of flexablity with what it's funtions is. This could mean that in the future Apple will add to the iPod and make it more PDA like or have digital camera features or something along that line.

Hmmm... It must be one of those word puzzles (or a minor glitch in recognizing the big J's handwriting on some memo)
