Ok I may be able to buy an Apple PowerCD with the accesories for $50 CDN or about $32 US. Is it worth it?, it looks pretty sweet.

Any thoughts would be great, Thanks.

absolutely!

grab it, i love mine, it was my very first CD. it does some great stuff with PhotoCd's as a standalone display with a television and it was my CD player for years in the shop as a standalone unit playing thru a pair of computer speakers. that's why i nabbed a refurb from the user group connection back in the day.

check the links project in peripherals for info about it.

I GOTZ MY APPLE POWERCD TODAY AND IT RULES!.

It's like a '93 unportable iPod. Everything still works and it's still stylish!, it's freaking amazing. I'm just going to chill in backlit glory for now.

But here's a question, why would you want to remove the powerCD from the base? and how much did this bad-boy cost "back in the day"?

Thing is though, if you detach it from the base, how does it get power? The base has the AC adapter plug, and the battery compartment.

I was thinking the same thing, with making it a walkman, but it doesnt have any power without the base. The only reason for the detachable case is that it allowed the PowerCd to shipped in a smaller box?.

might be interesting if one were to have a DB-25 connector somewhere on the center console of a vehicle, now, wouldn't it?

mine cost something on the order of $100 on clearance from the user group connection IIRC. dunno the MSRP, check out the links project for info.

"so did i, although its missing its power adapter, and i haven't gotten it to run off batteries. "

Does the screen light up when you turn it on?

I found a PowerCD that lit up, but the CD didn't spin.

Turning the CD hub by hand, it felt very stiff.

The solution was to CAREFULLY insert two skinny knives under opposite sides of the CD hub, and GENTLY pry it up, so that it wasn't scraping on the surface below, and spun freely.

Mine's working fine now. I just have to find a remote and power supply for it.

Also, be careful not to stick the knives too far in, or you'll knock loose a springy thing in there that rubs against the CD spindle shaft. I think it makes the CD stop spinning when you push "stop" faster, by creating friction. As if the battery life wasn't short enough without extra drag on the motor...

The first time I fixed my PowerCD I knocked that springy thing off, and it was making a clicky grinding noise when ever the CD was spinning. It was easy enough to put back in, I just had to pry the CD hub totally off, re-attach the spring, and push the hub back on (but not so far on that it stops working again!)

For those of you with a PowerCD without an AC adapter, I found a cheap and easy to find replacement: The adapters from the original Sega Genesis.

The PowerCD manual lists it's power requirements as 7-11 V DC, 1.2A. The Genesis I adapter puts out 10V DC, 1.2A. Perfect. It even has the proper sized connector.

The only problem is that the PowerCD wants center positive, and the Genesis I adapter is center negative. All this means is that you have to cut the adapter cord (or open the adapter case if you have the funky screwdriver required) and swap the wires.

Make sure you are using the adapter for the original Genesis (adapter model number 1602-3), not the smaller Genesis II adapter (also used for the Game Gear, adapter model number MK-2103), which only puts out .85A and has the wrong size plug.

I am using a Genesis adapter to power my PowerCD, and it's working great.
