Ok, today I received a green light on the two other 950s. That will give me a grand total of three. I was considering setting up an appleseed cluster and have them do something. The problem is that I have no idea what to do. I don't know of any distributed processing clients that support 68k anymore, like folding@home, seti@home, etc. Whatever I do, it's gotta be worth both the electricity i'm going to be using and the heat that they will generate. If anybody has any thoughts, let me know. I'm up for trying anything. As a side note, I'm really tempted to plug the first into the wall, then use a monitor cable from out of the back of the first, into the second, and the same for the third, so when i turn the key for the first, they all boot up, but decided that it would probably be a serious risk to power surges and such (and the fact that one power supply can't drive 3 950s!) One other thing, this place is great. I've been reading a lot of the posts and i can't get enough. This was what a few of us tried to do on the retromac68k news posts, but it never worked out. Most people were there to leech software and nothing else. Working: PM 8500 g3 420mhz (Daisy) Quadra 950 w/ videovision studio card ;-) (Christina) Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130

There is a common misconception amoung people that IEC-out connectors on the back of computers are driven by the PSU. In fact, it is simply linked to the mains voltage. There's no danger in linking computers unless you go over your power rating - in Australia this is usually 10 amps, and at 240 V this gives 2400 Watts - or about 8 Quadra 950s decked out. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City

actually it's a "switched" connection, so you would want to be mindful of the max. spec. of that portion of a switching power supply. i'm sure its capacity is considerably more than the consumption of two or three macs as long as they aren't booting all at exactly the same time, but it also might be considerably less than the max rated load of a single mains outlet, but that's just a paranoid guesstimate.jt ™. .

They are here! I picked them up tonight from a friend who was going to throw them away! They are not working right now, but he thinks both scsi cables are bad, mine was bad when i got it. So my count is now 3 950's all rescued from the trash. I won't have any time for a few days to mess with them. They need a lot of TLC, and I'm just the person to give it. I've decided to start with an appleseed cluster and benchmark it then just keep them around, i'm not sure if it's worth keeping all three up and going for simple webpage serving. The other cool thing, is that the one key i have will start 2 machines! Here's a few pics of the trio http://homepage.mac.com/avavricek/PhotoAlbum2.html Working: PM 8500 g3 420mhz (Daisy) Quadra 950 w/ videovision studio card ;-) (Christina) Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130

appleseed is a parallel processing project that apparently works, and works well. A few months ago, i emailed one of the developers asking if they had any success with 68k, since their webpage talked just g3s and g4s. I don't know much else besides that. Here's the webpage: http://exodus.physics.ucla.edu/appleseed/appleseed.html if anybody else has worked on something like this or is willing to construct one, it'd be great to benchmark the clusters and see exactly what a bunch of 68k can really do. Well, I've got the 2 950's up and running. Haven't installed software yet, but they are working. I thought I knew what i was getting, since i've been watching these 2 for about a year, but while I was putting their pieces together, I found a little treasure: One of them had signatures along the underside of the top of the case!!!! I know about the mac pluses, but that's all I thought apple did that to. I posted some crappy pics of the sigs and of the motherboard info, just for grins and giggles. http://homepage.mac.com/avavricek/PhotoAlbum3.html If this is nothing new, let me know so I don't go around making a fool of myself. If it is cool, then i'll make a rubbing of them and identify them and get a some better pics out there. Thanks for any info. Well, that's the first I've heard of sigs in the 950's- now I'll have to tear mine apart and see if I've got 'em too!

I found out from a friend of mine that the 950 with the sigs was bought by the consumer tech lab of a major business here in town. Can't say who, incase they find out it's missing... ;-) anyway, i was wondering what the best way to find out when this model was made, i remember seeing a post about pre-plus machines and that web-based app. Is tattletech the best way to go? I've never used it, so i don't know what exactly it will show me. I wanted to know when that machine was made exactly.PM 8500 OC g3 420mhz (Daisy) (3) Quadra 950's Quadra 650 Performa 476 PB 165 Classic Newton 130 Edited by - thelip on 22 May 2002 14:46:42 |

OK, here is some identified names from the case:Amazon (?) Product Design Team (the amazon looks like a hand drawn logo with a little stripe below it.) Larry Barbera _____________ (can't read signature) Jonathon Bernard Steven S Chase Raymond Lee Bill Lewis Jimmy M___ (can't make it out, might be "mato") Ben P____ (Can't make that out either) then further down and not in line with the rest is a signature that I can't make out yet, but it looks some like "carlo frible" but I don't think that's right. I made some rubbings and will be scanning them in later. Of course all these names are somewhat a guess, since i'm not looking at them square on, plus they are signatures and difficult to read. The rubbings didn't come out to well, the writings weren't raised enough to get anything from them. I'll keep you all updated. try strong side lighting in a dark room so shadows will help to define the low profile raised signatures. also google for info on sigs in cases from around the time of the TAM ahd the wox IIgs to find any mention of the 950. i know several signatured models came out over the years. jt =8-} jt ™. .

TattleTech will tell you the date of the last PRAM hard reset, but unless the PRAM battery has been doing its job over the last 10 years this date won't be accurate. However, you can input the serial number of your computer and find out from that. TattleTech is good - get it!
