I'm trying to save my 68k macs from my parents. They wonder what possible use I have for all these machines sitting around. So, is it plausible to use a Quadra 700 as a web server? I'll have it hooked up to part of a cable modem.

Ahh, I love the Quadra 700 (it being my first 68K Mac). Since it has onboard ethernet along with 2 Nubus slots, it would be plausible. Not only that, but it's also small and runs without a monitor just fine.

What would be the best server software to run on this machine?

Hmm... looks like I'll have to learn a thing or two about networking... ^_^

I have a Quadra 700 that I have run a webcam out of before so it is definately possible. I used the ethernet port to hook it to the internet through an airport base station, though any "residental gateway" should do the trick. I set up the base station to map port 80 (the webserver port) to the IP address of the Quadra 700 so people who were not on the local network could access it. The actual camera I used was a Quickcam 100 and the webcam server software was a copy of WebCamToo v1.4 that I downloaded from pure-mac.com. I am not sure but you may need Open Transport for this to work.

it's like being slashdotted but... not quite

nice site, love the muscle cars, and the tones in the portraits. nabbed and took a really close look at the detail of "coupe", very cool, but don't understand the "work"(medium, tools, what you're "going for"), please explain some of your terminology: crisp and others describing your process.* and what is "slashdotted"?

hat's off on the treasure trove of nubus cards!

*i've never played with pixels, my background is printmaking and the first really useful ('nuf so I REALLY learned it) app. for me was fontographer, so hard edged graphics are more my style and would like to understand the "artistic sensibilities" (at a loss for words again) implied by the descriptive terms.

2 visits to my lil Quadra isn't quite there, but is as close as I've been! :D

thanks for clarification, * see footnote re webspesk

the artistic intent i kind of figured, but confirmation that goal might be kind of like a twist on a super-photo-realism in ready4web graphic formatting of scans of realworld photos (did i communicate that intelligibly?), makes "coupe.gif" seem VERY succesful and interesting concept to me. (don't even touch on concept of coherence please )

humble suggestion: see if docs on ADOBE's antialiasing strategies for type bitmap display optimization are available/helpful, the notion of trying to do similar thing using color in web images as art gives me a headache (at 16 bit grayscale the level of throbbing is manageable for deciphering/postscript-curve-fitting line art scans), let me know if I'm even close on this guesstimation of artistic intent.

*from context figured as much, but connotations & derivations of language are a favorite timesink...............stems from years of coping with word recalldeficit/quick-substite-on-the-fly/rogetaccesswordyoucouldnotrememberifyourlifedependedonit/discovernewsubstitute/lookupdef....VICIOUS never ending cycle..........but fun!

absolutely :). the maths behind doing those kind of images is something I haven't studied... But as we're mac 68k'ers, we should all know about making the absolute best of something limited.

Another section of my page, under 'self'... follow the link to the older sections of my online diary, and you'll find several newcreatedy words I picked up from time to time. Love it. The trance I get into when pixelling is like that I can get into with fingers a-tapping away & not wanting to pause... let alone stop while the rest of my mind thinks of the right word.

I don't do the maths either, got a great "feel" for numbers, but no real training. What I meant was to look at the illustrations and get a feel for where they're going with the algorithms from the "look" of the "pixel flow"/"gradations" in the anti-aliasing and how they fool the eye. I hope that wasn't too murky, .txt based communication just doesn't cut it for this kind of thing.

Finally got back on your site this evening, cokegirl is amazing, but snapper really blows me away, especially the "loose crop" effect, pulls my eye in like a black hole, but it's white!

keep kickin'-@$$ fellow maniac,
