Well, Steve was willing to put PCI slots in it.....if only he was willing to put some in the iMac.
It looks good, though-the picture of it open from the top reminds me of my 660A/V.

This is beautiful! Reminds me of that Beowulf cluster of 6100s I saw a while ago. What next, OS X on Cray hardware?

no, but you've hit on a great ad piccie: a hex(or oct?)agon of those racks around a shortest distance fast networking hub like the old crays would be gorgeous!

, I hadn't seen that one!!! So who is going to make a "warming oven" of LCs? Seems like a number of the regulars here (you know who you are ) have more than a rack's worth of pizzaboxes. Admittedly, getting 480 GB per LC might be hard, but a cluster of 68ks might make a nice hack for some general leading a platoon of LCs out of enemy territory.

The funny part is trying to find a comparable server from any other company for anything close to the Xserve's cost...it's not gonna happen.

This is a bold move by Apple, and if they advertise it well, Apple will OWN the server market in no time!

Actually, I'm reading the site again. The price is pretty fine for what you are getting:
-Unlimited liscences for Mac OS X Server
-4 Hot-swap drive bays
-2 PCI slots
-Gigabit Ethernet
-Firewire!

And all mounted in 1U of rack space.

WOW! hadn't gotten that deep into the links there yet. that'd make an awesome shadow box, wall mounted CPU! or maybe in a custom workstation with a couple of rackmount swingout bays displayed under a glass desktop.

that'd look kinda purty as a desktop (under glass) coproccesor for my MicroQuadraFeetsBox/Portrait,! that'd be one nice accelerator for a Mac with 68k Cachet!

Now, I'm envisioning an XServe suspended from one of those hospital bedside IV drip poles. All the cords would drape down onto my desktop feeding me precious CPU cycles, pixels, n' packets for my daily Macintosh fix. (now if I could only install a firewire port in my skull, I'd be happy)

I want one. I imagine that the biggest selling point for these things will not be the hardware itself, but that unlimited OS X server lisense they come with. Oh, and the blue diode status displays on the front. Blue diodes are cool.
