Most of those wern't actually 'prototypes' as such, they were just concept ideas worked out for fun and creativity, with certain ideas passed into the regular models.

. . . or blatant rip-offs of ground-breaking original creations by witless hacks!

Hmmm... interesting...
If these pics are any indication, Apple's been wanting to move to a (almost) entirely flat-screen linup even as far back as the early 90's! Now that's some forsight!

The DuoDock with the LCD screen is my personal favorite! I think that's the goal of at least a dozen hack ideas from AFF!!

AAF? they've got hacks?!!

which one is a DuoDock, none of them looked like one to me.

i was glad to see Alan Kay get some credit farther down the page. but then again, is he an apple research fellow? my memory is shot! time to back up and reformat!

AFF, not AAF!

This one. I'm assuming that's a floppy drive slot in front, a caddy-loaded CD-ROM slot on the side, and the DuoBook goes in the back. The space at the top of the LCD screen looks like it might hold a stylus, leading me to believe that it's a pressure-sensitive/touch screen Duo! Sort of like a combination between a Newton and a DuoDock! What I wouldn't give to have seen that come to fruition from the folks at Apple...

I don't think that Apple would have made flat screen macs in 1992/3. When they made the 20th Anniversary Mac in 1997, they used an LCD screen and many people called it "obscure and unnecesary technology".
The fact that it cost $10,000 in 97 also would discourage them from making something like it in 92. Those "prototypes" are probably nothing but Photoshop jobs.

About half of those prototypes appeared in an old issue of Macworld I have. If I remember correctly, they were not working prototypes, just mockups made out of plastic and balsa wood. The only ones in that list I have heard of their actually being working prototypes for were the Palidin and Deep Dish.I think the guy who runs Applefritter has a Deep Dish and a Palidin came up on Ebay once.

Back again. I went and unearthed that Macworld to see what it said about that duodock computer. According to the Macworld article, it is not a duodock, the flat panel display is the laptop, it detaches from the base unit and becomes a self contained tablet computer or plugs into the keyboard by itself. Here is the description...

"Modular Overkilll: Modulary seems like a winning solution to design problems. Trouble is, people become bewildered by too many configuation options. Case in point: you could configure this system as a pen-based tablet computer, a notebook with keyboard and touchpad, a full desktop computer, and more. The display module is a self contained tablet computer controlled by a pen. At your main work site you could dock the tablet with a desk module and use the keyboard cordlessly. The desk module would provide more storage, enhanced networking and video, and expansion options" Macworld May 1995

Ahhh, I see! Still very cool! I drew up my own ideas for a DuoDock with a built-in LCD display, I'll scan and post them later tonight! Why can't I stop shotuing?!

I like the LC 1992 prototype with those little yellow feetsies. Also I am suprised that Apple did not make some version of that pyramid Mac except with an LCD screen, of course a pyramid mouse would hurt:)

That's what I said - design mockups, not actual prototypes.

I can't believe those prototypes are real....the engineers at Apple in '92 were much more creative than I thought!

Yeah, some of these wouldn't have worked too well as actual products with reasonable prices. But are they ever fun to look at!! Whoo! I'd love to get my hands on some of them nowadays. Whoo.

How about keeping remarks like that to yourself, huh? Maybe your snide comments and opinions can become some sort of covert op that the rest of us don't have to hear about.

DId anyone else notice that wristwatch that changes one country's currency into another's? What an idea! That's one of the least plausible things they could have come up with, I think...

btw: babelfish the NC prototype text, sounds like turtleneck and larry ellison were trying to out-dork each other! <rolleyes>
