Another Saturday, another gaggle of garage sales, another 68k (SAF fine print: "Limit one Mac per weekend per customer!").This time, I found a minimally equiped (4MB RAM, 120 MB HD) headless Performa 450 for $2. I'd never been inside a pizzabox mac before. Its got such a cute little mobo. Makes me wonder about terminology, though. Is the mobo of a pizzbox Mac the pizza? Are the chips the toppings? Is a stock-configured mobo with no added RAM or cards a "cheese pizza"?. I also picked up an old Digital (Compaq? Hewpaq?) 386 notebook computer with DOS, but its going straight to the vivisection chamber. Muhahaha!!!! g4from128k ------------ -- The Liberated: PB 190cs, Outbound 2030E, Performa 450 -- The Originals: 128k, Mac II -- The Contraband: 7585e & 8575G3 FrankenMacs, Pismo PB, G4/450 AGP Tower mit Cinema Display |

Good find on the pizza-box Mac! I think you're right- if we're gonna call 'em "pizza-boxes", the analogy should be continued to the internals! Maybe the RAM simms should be the "Crazy Bread"... Also, please be gentle with that little 386- the OS may be a steaming pile of <bleep>, but that hardware has potential... throw some older version of Linux on there and let him roam free! LOL! i paid thru the nose for a (black) GrID luggable that i knew (hoped) would be dead. luckily, i haven't found the power adapter spec, it's got a HUGE (full size of unit, removable!) battery compartment underneath (lotsa makeshift Duo amp/hour-age!) and i still haven't got the heart to take it apart without reassembling it!*hangs head in shame!* jt ™. .

Great work with the LCIII. One of the biggest advantages that the case offers is that it is very easy to dissassemble the entire thing, with no tools needed at all. I can put one together in about 1 or two minutes. How big is the hard drive? Mine only has a 40 megger, but i'm hoping that will change soon...At the moment my LCIII setup is: standard 512k of vram 8 megs of ram 40 meg HD 2x external AppleCD 300 System 7.1 However sometime i want to refurbish it, and make it: 768k of VRAM 20 megs of ram 250 meg HD 2x external AppleCD 300 System 7.6.1 I might even put in an LC475 mobo if i have the money. Anyway, enough of my rambling, and have fun! -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

Actually, I had the very long-shot hope that it was a PDP-based notebook computer. The person selling it was clueless (only new that it was not windows and when I asked if it was DOS, they said "I guess so") I learned to program on PDP-11 back in the late 70s, and used a old VAX11/750 at a former employer for many years. g4from128k ------------ -- The Liberated: PB 190cs, Outbound 2030E, Performa 450 -- The Originals: 128k, Mac II -- The Contraband: 7585e & 8575G3 FrankenMacs, Pismo PB, G4/450 AGP Tower mit Cinema Display |

Good luck finding the add-on goodies for your LC III. I have not decided what I'll do with the Performa 450 (factory stock config of 4MB RAM, 512kB VRAM, 120 MB HD). I might hack in an old floptical drive and a 3 1/2" syquest 270 MB removable (but that is a topic for the 69k hacks forum). g4from128k

For me, once some critical number of screws are out, its like blood in the water. I even strip the metal cover plates off of chips (486 chips and UVEPROMs are interesting), open up crystal oscillators, remove the really cool rare-earth magnets from HD motors and head actuators, pull lenses out of CD-ROM drives etc. Choice, interesting tidbits line my book shelves and the denuded carcass (left over casing, printed circuit boards) goes out the door. Before anyone gets upset, no Macs have fallen prey to my screw driver. Although an dying Apple Laserwriter II SC mets its fate in frenzy of disassembly one night (ubercool laser unit inside!). Hmmm, an array of mixed pizzaboxes. I wonder if you could create a rainbow coalition of pizza-box computers -- a place were all OS's can live in harmony -- a place where computers have no fear of hackers -- a place where ....* the inspiring music is swelling, the treacle is flowing, the audience is barfing * Sorry (too much coffee this morning) g4from128k

Well the reason the 69k processors were never released was because it required an extra "routine" in the operating system. It was found that this "routine" involved "Barry White music" for full optimization. Apple just could not afford to pay the royalities:)
