Hey there-
As most of you know by now, I've been working on fixing and maxing-out a sweet little SE/30 that I picked up last week for $2. I'm getting near the end of the internal work (just need to find a Mac IIsi or IIfx ROM chip...), so now I'm starting to think about the final look of the system. I've never done any real case painting/hacking, but I figure that this is the perfect computer to learn on- not much money invested, and not too rare.
So, now I'm wondering what I should do with this thing! Of course, I could always do the standard blackmac thing, and, while that would certainly look cool, it's been done to death. I don't really have the tools or skills to do any serious case modding (windows, etc.), but I'm sure I can handle something simple.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
SpaceBoy

Hmmm... One of my first ideas was covering it in deep, deep shag rug- make it a 'Barbarella-Mac'! The heat issues might be a challenge, though...
Whatever I do, I plan on renaming it the "SE/x", as it should have been called (the other 030 macs of the same era had the 'x' after the model name), if Apple hadn't cowed to being PC...

LOL! lemme see? has anybody decoupaged some kinda crap onto the outside of a mac case yet? tasteful centerfold art or maybe vargas girl cutouts come to mind with a name like that!

Well, if you had a bunch of dead/unused keyboards, you could pop the key caps off and totally tile the outside of the case with keys. With enough keyboards, to create a sufficient collection of vowels, you could even spell out some pithy ode to the 68k. Downside, you would need very many keyboards. (Hmmm, if each member of the MLA contributed one bag of keycaps.....)

Alternatives: tile with AOL Disks, wrap in a black-velvet Elvis, paper mache it with pages from a Mac manual (we don't need the stick'n manuals, right?), wrap in holographic wrapping paper, paint white with black spots (a Dalmaction).

Happy Hacking,

Hey guys- great ideas! I esp. like the keycaps idea- that'd be really cool!
Keep 'em coming!

Are you sure you would rather have a nice spotted Dalmaction? I suppose it would be more appropriate on a monochrome Mac. Of course, a better black'n'white paint job would be the infamous Dogcow! Moof! Moof!

More alternatives: glow-in-the-dark paint (for late nite sessions on the MLA forums), nails glued head-down all over the case (very spiky), frosted like a cake with white silicone rubber (probably messy, ugly, or both), tiled with leftover 256k SIMMs (thats one way to add RAM to an SE/30), ...

Sorry, this posting is getting entirely too silly!

i don't know if i suggested it here or over on fritter, but has anybody cast a new compact mac case out of concrete yet? if you sandblasted the wood for the mold to bring out the grain and cast in metal form clips and maybe a pair of rebar carry handles on the sides you'd be sure to get a slot in the hacks section on fritter!

might have to glue some wire mesh onto the real case and cast around it, but you could probably keep it about a half inch thick, but what'd be killer would be matching keyboard and mouse shells! it'd be kinda like a pillbox shore emplacement from saving private ryan if you wanted to take it in that direction. dunno, i'd research the college engineering class concrete canoe races for techniques and tips on how to pull it off if i were to try this one.

Just cast a compact mac into concrete with a rebar sticking out for a handle. "Indestructo-Mac!"

Someone did decoupage their Plus with newspaper - I believe it's on 'Fritter.

The one thing I've always wanted to see (and if I ever get around to it, it'll be one of my first hacks) is a compact mac setup like Oliver's Bannana Jr. 6000.

With text-speech software installed, it'd complete the transformation (unless of course you also pick up an ADB I/O so that you can actually make those feet move! Unfortunately I don't know where you can get one these days but if you could...)http://www.iwac.se/adbiotech/ADB_IO/

I remember a bunch of Banana Mac Resedit hacks for the 128k back in the 80s. These included various Gene Simmons references. The trash can was a giant Gene Simmons tongue and the "Empty Trash" menu item was hacked to say "Feed Gene"

But now, the Banana Jr. 6000 makes me shudder because it has been co-opted by the evil empire. A compact mac mit feets reminds me of the oh so helpful talking mac/wizard in Microslut Orifice. Oh well, another happy culture icon absorbed by Gates of Hell.

I was talking with my supervisor at work the other day about those Lego Mindstorms kits... wouldn't itrock to mount a Mac on some sort of robotic body?! I'm thinking something like that big cast-iron spider from "Wild Wild West", but with a Mac sitting on top (with a Satan face on the screen, of course! )
Man, wouldn't that be the end of the world!

if you're going in that direction, the mouth really ought to be a tray loading CD and you would be well advised to avoid getting an america offline installer anywhere near it!

imho, of course!

I only meant to imply that the only good use for an AOL cd is as a frisbee!
