First there was the Performa 638CD, loaned as an attempt to get me back in school.

Then I discovered Goodwill Computerworks in Austin (TX). For about two months all Macs were half–off. Zowie!

Got an SE/30 (with wiggly video and occasional prison bar startup), and a sweet SE FDHD (still got that one, now mit ethernet!). Got Classic, SE, and HP Deskwriter for friend’s kid’s Subversive System 6 Network (their dad has a Wal-Mart HP Wintel machine - hates macs with a passion). Next up another SE for cousin Lorraine.

Told the Performa to piss off and got a Quadra 950 (beefcake!). Pushed the SE/30 to 128 Megs. Got a IIsi for step-mother’s mom (loved that one after having to crack open the compacts, but it refused to maintain a stable connection with 7.5.5/Open Transport - bad phone lines?)

Upgraded cousin Lorraine to SE/30, then LC 575. Upgraded the kids to Quadra 660AV and Quadra 605 w/full ‘040 (which I think is the coolest Quadra ever - small and powerful).

Then - heresy! Found a Power Mac 7100/80 with MultipleScan 1705 for $100 at the library thrift store. Thus I entered the nether regions of evil RISC (it was still Nubus -whimper-). Sold off the SE/30’s RAM and gave the 950 back to Goodwill, and got a Power Mac 6500/275 (wait! I’ve learned the error of my ways - read on). 7100 went to Mom. Dad gets me Compaq Deskpro 4000 with Windows98 (put that hot poker down! I swear I’ve reformed).

And...

The Performa succeeded in it’s mission, I’m back in school. And the damn 6500 has locked up for the last time. I’m giving it to Mom, the Compaq goes the Wintel friend, and I now have the only computer I need: a IIci running System 6 (well, that one and the SE FDHD and the SE/30 and I really want a IIfx and a PowerBook 100 - love that System 6 action). Soon I will produce mind-numbingly beautiful 1-bit graphics (I’m a Studio Art major).

What does the University IT guy say to this? “You should get an eMac.”

NEVER!!!

eMacs just plain look bad. If you want a compact mac get an good 'old color classic or even an iMac would do

Powermacs aren't bad machines neccessarily, they're just not as good.

Although, I own ALL 68k! What do I know about PPC?

Oh, yeah! Welcome to the Army!

by "mit" in your post, are you referring to the German word "mit" meaning "with"?

That was Italian, not Spanish.
Le cose che sono inconstituzionali sono illegali
It says:Anything that is unconstitutional is illegal.

Some kid at school thought that my German book was a Spanish book, so I think that kid at school is a complete idiot.

Wow, that went off on a tangent.

Next up: there is a LCIII (maybe 8/80 - original config?!) waiting to be liberated at a junk store in Amarillo. I have planned a little commando action...

Get LCIII, get 14" Hi-Res from Salvation Army, monitor cable from MacVizion. Quickly download games from Macintosh Garden, slowly transfer via LocalTalk, give to fellow Design II student's little girl. KidPix, ClarisWorks, etc. It's gonna rock!

We shall overcome!Go to Top of Page
