I was wondering if I could get mine copied for back-up and upgrades of future purchases. Anyone know if it can be done and/or where I can have this done?

Well, i've got good news and bad news...

Bad news is that you can't copy the rom.

Good news is that you can't lose it either! In the 2x00s the rom is on a card similar looking to powerbook ram. For the 120 and 130, i don't remember what it looks like, but i know you can pull a 2.0 rom from a 130 and put it in a 120. The rom can't be written to, and so it can't be changed. The system updates are stored in the system ram which is separate than the flash internal memory. So if you were to totally reset your newton, and lose all the info on all stores, you would go back to what the newton was when it was shipped. I've never heard of corrupt roms. If that were the case, you can buy broken newtons (preferably with dead displays.) and pull the rom out of that.

BTW, a cool little tidbit is that the emate rom was labeled 2.2. It had the same newton os that was on the 2.1 rom but included the newtworks software.

legalities aside, there is NO SUCH THING as a ROM or any other starage format that can't be copied. they can make it difficult to write the info to a storage medium that would be practical to use in a device if your original were to be stolen and you could only obtain a replacement product with an inferior ROM rev, but NEVER, say "never!"

oh yeah! you CAN lose it: to THEFT!!!!!!!

that's one of the reasons there is a LONG backlog of legal precedent for the right of the consumer to make backup copies of ANY legally acquired IP, regardless of attempts to preclude the practice thru b.s. in the liscense agreement for its use.

Well I had this MP100 with the 1.2 ROM and I have this MP120 with the 2.0 ROM, the MP100 was horrid in comparison to the MP120, so I had hoped to copy the 2.0 ROM amd replace the 1.2 ROM with that.
But instead I trade the MP100 to Timaclover for a PM6100 (if he ever ships it to me).
