Is it possible to put more than 10MB of RAM in my LC II.
I'd try it right off bat, but I don't want to damage it.
Is there any way to hack something into it to allow me to have more RAM? I have a couple of 4MB SIMMs the same kind that I use in my LC that I could put in the LC II to make 12MB if possible.

If you put in 2 4MB SIMMS, you will still only be able to see and use 10 meg. Unless you like hardware hacking, there's no way to get 12 meg for use.

Exactly. Unfortunately, anything even resembling this would probably require you to reprogram the ROMs, which is a very hard thing to do. The ROMs are probably programmed to disable the lower two megs of ram on the mobo.

More to the point, the ROM's were never programmed to address more than 10MB. If you threw in 16MB simms, the Mac still wouldn't address more than 10MB - the Mac just doesn't know the extra RAM is even there - see what i mean?

I guess nobody thought in those days that we would ever need more RAM!

Uh huh! *where have i heard that before?*

thank your lucky stars it was a 10 Megabyte address ceiling. the guys who built the wire wrap prototypes of the IBM PC couldn't conceive of anybody ever needing to address more than 640 Kilobytes of RAM!

the IBM architecture was open enough and the market was big enough that lots of workarounds were developed. the only case of that happening in the Mac world that i recall was Connectix' reaming of apple for an undisclosed amount with the MODE 32 software patent!

*yay! way to go connectix! f***'**!*

jt . .

How to get an LC II to recognize more RAM, Hmmm. Since the LC II has a PMMU (built into the 68030) you could could run virtual memory if only you could have a fast enough disk drive. A SCSI silicon RAM disk should create a moderately spunky swap space for VM-based operations. It might not let you work on a 100 MB photoshop image, but it would let load and use a variety of applications simultaneously (no ROM reprograming needed). I do remember, back in the early 90s, that some companies developed and marketed silicon RAM disks (touting submillisecond access times and throughput to the limit of bus interface.) Could be an interesting uber-hacker project to recreate one of these things.

Happy Hacking,
