Well, another day, another warehouse of old computers!
As many of you surely know from my long posting to the website forum, i once had a close encounter with a lot of Mac's being stored in a warehouse in norther California.
Anyway, I saw a flyer on campus telling of a computer surplus sale (are there any sweeter words in the english language?!), so, after much searching, I finally found the old barn where the sale was happening. Much to my delight, there were piles and piles of computers- and most of 'em were Macs! Oh joy!
After much digging, I made off with two PowerMac 7600/132's (blasphemy, I know...), a tortured-looking SE/30, and some other assorted misc. items, all for $10! Score! The really sad part is how much stuff there was that I couldn't adopt- there must've been at least 30 or 40 Mac II's, 50 or 60 PowerMac 7100/66's, and a few completly trashed all-in-one Performa 52xx series machines. Really, a lot of this stuff was totally trashed. One of the saddest things I saw was an amazing, HUGE Sillicon Graphics IRIX 3360 (I'm not totally sure about the number...) system. It was about the size of a mini-fridge on it's side, and just looked darn cool. I only wish I had the room to adopt it... sigh. I guess you can't save 'em all. From what the guys holding the sale told me, everything that didn't get sold today is going in the trash tomorrow, so I may be doing some dumpster-diving tomorrow!
The SE/30 is so discolored, at first I thought it was a soggy old cardboard box. I just got it home and took some pix, which I'll upload in a few min. Really, it's the worst discoloration I've personally seen- it looks like it was treated to a nice cup of coffee (poured over the top!), then left out in some soothing acid rain for a few years! Yikes! If there was ever a Mac in need of a case paint job, this is it...
Well, I'm going to go plug it in and fire it up... wish me luck!

Hey, I just realized that maybe this belongs under "68k conquests". If so, sorry for the goof!

Well, I just fired up the little guy... and he booted like a champ! System 6.0.8, a 40-meg hard drive, and an amazing ONE MEG of RAM!
The drive is loaded with software, games, utilities, etc. I'll need to take some time and dig through it all.
Anyway, posting some pics to my homepage, you can see the little guy here:

Thanks!

Do a nice paint job and send it to 'Fritter: they recently had the "Rock-Speckled" Mac and the red-crackled one too.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. As I was lugging it home (quite a long walk...) I was thinking, "has anyone ever covered a Mac in tiles?". By that, I mean the little one-inch-by-one-inch tiles that you might see at Home Depot or some such place. It sure would add to the system's weight, but if done cleverly, might look cool, esp. if there was some cool pattern. Of course, I'll most likely just do some sort of paint job or something. Still, tiles might be cool...
One of the other misc. items I brought home is an IBM 2-gig SCSI hard drive that I pulled from a pretty dead looking PowerMac 7100. From what I've read online, the SE/30 should take the 2-gig drive just fine, as well as some of these simms I've got lying around in ziplock baggies... I may end up making this little guy fly! Although, I must say, even with only 1 meg of RAM the system boots in about 3 seconds flat. Man, that's just amazing! When I first flipped the switch, I glanced away, and saw the desktop come up from the corner of my eye- my first thought was that something must be wrong- it can't have booted that fast! But, of course, it did...
Thanks,
SpaceBoy
PS What are my odds of finding one of those rare upgrade cards for the SE/30? Video, CPU, ethernet, whatever...

Holy cow! I just read that the SE/30 has 8 RAM slots! That's great! I must've been thinking about the Classic, as I thought that the SE/30 needed a RAM-expander card to add more memory. Coolness!

Well, it's me again.
I've spent the past couple of hours working on the SE/30- had some great 'ups' and some low 'downs'.
I, err, borrowed 32 megs of 30-pin SIMMs from HAL-9000, my Quadra 950 ("My mind is going, Dave... I can feel it going... can you hear me Dave?...), and the /30 sees all 32 megs! Cool.
Next, while I had the case apart, I gave the rear shell a good bath in the tub- most of that nasty sludge/grime came right off. The case is still pretty yellow on the top and left side, but I'll work on that later. I got some nice pics of the case in the tub, with it's new best friend, Mr. Sponge.
The last part of my project tonight was to upgrade the hard drive, from the 40 meg drive to the 2 gig drive I got at the sale. After a lot of inventive tinkering (linking three drives via two power supplies and one PowerMac 7100/G3-266), I finally had the 2 gig drive loaded with all the files to get started on the /30. Finally, I mounted the 2 gig drive in the /30's bracket, stuck it in the /30, and... and... AND... nothing. The drive seems completely dead. It won'd spin, click, smoke, grind, gurgle or beg for mercy. I just don't know what I did wrong. Maybe I shorted it out... but I don't think so... sigh.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
SpaceBoy

Well, it's me again-
I was up till about 2:00 am last night, trying to figure out what was wrong with the drive and the SE/30, but I was stumped. I tried powering the drive from my other mac's (inc. the 7100 that I'd set it up with in the first place), but it just wouldn't spin. Finally I went to sleep, and all night I dreamed that I was riding the crappy old school bus that I used to ride years ago. Over and over in my dream, I kept thinking, "Gee, this bus sure is scuzzy. This is a **scuzzy bus**!". Finally, when I woke up this morning, I figured out what was wrong with the drive: I'd been testing it by plugging it in to the power cable and starting the computer. What I didn't realize is that this type of drive needs a signal from the SCSI controller to start spinning! I hooked it up to both power and SCSI, and it fired right up! Now it's mounted in the /30, and so far, so good. It doesn't boot yet- I still need to 'bless' the system folder, I think, but at least it's spinning, huh? I feel kinda dumb- but it's always the simple ones that really get me!
Anyway, I should have more time to play with it later today, and I'll post any news.
Thanks again, everyone!
