I think that the Quadra 840AV and Powerbook 550 top out as best 68k's ever! What do you guys think?

Weeeeell, I'll agree that the 840av is one bad mofo, but I'd have to say that, in terms of sheer brute size, the Quadra 950 takes the prize. I'd love to have a 840, but I'm darn happy with my beefy Q950.
Just a thought.

Quadra 630, not the fastest, biggest or best in any category except general use mass storage, but hands down, the most versatile machine of the generation! they'll be in useful front line service for years to come as consumer grade entertainment hubs! no other 68k is still in general service!

PowerBook 100, revolutionary archetype, every notebook computer on the planet, including the Ti's and Sony's VAIOs, are direct (form factor and SCSI/target disk mode) descendents of the BabyPB!

IMHO, of course!

I agree: the king of desktops is both the 950 and the 840AV (or the 100 MHz 68040 card! ) and the king of laptops is the 550c.

King of the Desktops is the Quadra 950 or the Quadra 630 maxed out.

Imagine: Quadra 630, 64 MB of RAM (or more), Ethernet CS, DOS Compatibility card w/ 32MB of it's own RAM, TV Tuner or Apple Presentation or AV card.

That's one hades of a computer.

As for King (Queen) of the Laptops... I'd go with a Duo 280c w/ DuoDock 2.

...and VERY easily overclockable to 40Mhz :)

I'd definitely include those that everyone else has - 840av/550c first, 950/630 next up.

550c first just cos it's... raaaaaare

:D

COOL! and look at this:
http://www.nccomputers.com/products/other.html
http://www.nmt.edu/~armiller/news/kingston.txt

put a Kingston 133 in a 40Mhz 630 and have a 160Mhz 486DX compatable! i wonder if a mac emulator would run on it? did/will any emulators run on a 486 under DOS/Win3.x?

AV Macs are cool, but they've got way too many compatability issues for me after dealing with the Rocket's! but i'm thinking about hunting down some Stage Twos w/DSP Daughtercards and a SCSI 2 Daughtercard when i have a 950 to stuff with 'em! i'd like to benchmark a monster like that against Cinemo's 840AV minibeast!

=8-}

i kinda like the 270c cuz it's the only Duo with a copro, did any of the mongobooks have copros?

No idea there - owned a PC for under 2 months... n then passed it on. However, pulling all the more performance out of a 630... go for it :D

If y'mean the 040's - the 550c did. eee it'd be nice. Though the screen's bigger but no more colours or resolution...

When I looked inside the 540c, the CPU looked the same as in any Quadra... I didn't look to see if it were socketed. I don't know if I want to go pulling her to pieces quite THAT far again though!

Hmmm...Right off the top of my head, I would have to say the Amiga 4000T, then the Atari TT. Throw in a Palm IIIx, and a Sega Genesis, and you've got some pretty decent 68k machines.

Oh, did you mean 68k Macs? Well then, the Quadra 950, hands down!

anything bigger than a BabyPB or a Duo is a MongoBook! they're just TOO FREAKIN' BIG!

they've finally gotten the Ti's down to a reasonable form factor. those mongobook billiard ball pointers were nuts! i wish they'd bring back the trackball, pads are even worse than billiard balls!

imho, of course!

No 68k laptop can beat a Duo 280c with a working type 3 battery, DuoDock II, or MiniDock. That is my ideal 68k machine. As for desktops, anything A/UX compatible with a decent ram limit is cool, like a 950 or a IIfx.

ta-dah!

from the FAQ's at: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/aux-faq/

===================================================================
G.02) What's the minimum system I need (CPU, disk and RAM) to run A/UX?
-------------------------------------------------------------------

A/UX 3.0 works on the MacII (with PMMU _or_ 68030 upgrade with FDHD ROM's installed), IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIfx, SE/30, IIsi (with 68882 chip) and the Quadra 700|900|950 computers. A/UX 3.0.1 (and later) adds support for the Q800 and Centris Machines (the Centrises _must_ have the real 68040 w/FPU - See Q&A #G.03). A/UX will run on the Quadra 610 and 650s (recall that A/UX requires the _real_ 68040 chip!) with a little bit of work.

IMHO

The best 68k is probably one that didnt happen;

Milan 060 running Magic(they work but to get any add ons seems to be nigh on impossible cos they use Milan pci or some such type thing and these were planned but not made I think:-/

My Quadra 840 av
86 meg ram
1.2 gig hard drive
500 meg hard drive
CD rom caddy drive

Would be the best but the Apple os is beyond me at the mo. To be blunt my Quadra takes too long to do anything and all I can say about the mac community is that it seems hold on a comparrioson occurs:-

Pc community: they like to be patronised and duped into buying tons of worthless gubbins

Apple community: as long as it is pretty it is ok, but prehiperals built to last.

Atari community: SH*T as far as hardware is concerned but you switch the thing on and it has the os built in and the os actually helps you to organise your computer wtf the os does on pc or mac I have no idea it seems the most important thing is to be able to put a pretty pic on the screen.

Apologies for profanities but Tos 2.06 is the most usefull os I have ever used and I use it to manage windows(emulating an Atari using Gemulator) I actually use Tos 2.06 for organising, deleting, dearchiving.

now is Gemulator a 68k?

my Atari stfm, because:-

My son puts it on & plays Spot the dog fuzzy felt type game, Thomas The Tank, and cos you get accessories which are mega(not pc or mac accessories) you boot up and to play the game or use the calculator you go to top right desktop menu. It is just so bloody simple to use. MagicMac I am hoping will be a hybrid of Tos & apple os's

Amigas:-( nil point
