I decided this arvo to try to get through a few of those little projects I've been saving for a rainy day, so out came the dumpster-rescued ImageWriter II from under the bed. I plug it in, turn it on... the print head moves a bit and then the error light comes on. Tried the self-test...no reaction. Also I noticed there's a loose spring sitting inside on the floor of the unit. Aside from this it seems to be in nice condition.

I don't have any experience with these printers. Is it dead? Can it be fixed? Does anyone want it for spare parts? Inquiring minds want to know!

Cheers!

mine's out on loan so i don't have anything to look at right now.

what kind of spring?

was the printer connected to the computer?

did you try feeding some paper into the ready position?

does the ribbon look like it's threaded correctly?

A little black tightly-wound one... about an inch long. A loop on either end.

Do I look like an idiot? Well, maybe I do... but anyway, yes, it was.

Yip

Looks correct to me... but then I don't have experience with these printers so I'm not 100 % sure.

I'm wondering what the error light signifies.

Cheers!

Dunno! but i AM an idiot, so i'll be able to tell if you're one when i do meet ya!

mostly, it's a matter of nailing down all the stupid little details to make sure we're on the same page. several times a simple little thing that was assumed shouldn't have been in this kind of discussion here!

have you found a user or repair manual online for it? mine is with the printer, but i think i might have another one to dig out if there isn't one online. there's also a link to printer repair info in the links project, but i don't remember seeing impact printer info. (or not!)

google would be a very good way to find out what the common catastrophic failure symptoms might be. (like print head failure on the CSPro)

does the printer have it's lid? IWII's don;t work without their lids, due to a little magnet the lids have on the to tell the printer everything is seated properly (OPINION: STUPID!)

secondly, look @ the metal rod that the printer carriage slides on. Is thre grime on it preventing travel of the carriage? Put a LITTLE bit of grease or oil on it, and spread it thin.

Found the magnet - now that IS stupid! However no go either with or without the lid in place.

The rod is uncorroded and slightly oily to the touch, so I'm pretty sure its not impeding the carriage.

I did find a service guide online (and in doing so found an AWESOME archive of apple service and user manuals ... http://home.wanadoo.nl/manual.man/manuals.html). One suggestion from the manual was to "Verify that option card dip switch is open/off with no card installed.". No pointers as to which of the 14 visible dip switches this might be though. I guess I'll just have to work my through all the squillion or so combinations....

Thanks for the help and suggestions lads.

Cheers!

that's not the one i remember, it had a different layout and there weren't nearly as many printer service manuals.

we had a link to the driver museum too, i used to get to gamba thru that one, but i couldn't find it last time i looked!

. . . and i'm STILL excited!

jt . .

p.s. somebody should put a link to our homepage and our links page on the Forums Menu or on the Active Topics page heading somewhere! it's really annoying to have to go thru ALL FORUMS and The Website Itself steps to get to links page to find links to post when answering somebody's questions in the forums. i didn't even realize we HAD a website homepage for a long time when i was a new recruit!

Anyway, a little unrelated story -- our Maths Computing Lab here at uni has 128 fanless iMacs... and about 20 IMAGEBANGERS!!! Freaking load whenever someone tries to print something.

I wonder how they're shared over the network, tho.
