You can use it as the reciever in an ultra long-range airport network... as in this article : http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/wireless/2001/05/03/longshot.html

Cheers!

You could hook it up to your mac and secretly drain the bank account of Bill Gates.

I've always thought about doing a line of site network setup between a few places... that would be fun.

How about plugging it into your mac with a TV tuner card and point it twoard China. I think it would be interesting to watch foreign TV shows.

If you mount a sensitive microphone in the middle, you can have a parabolic mic- great for spying on the neigh-, err, I mean bird watching! Really, I've made these before from old TV dish's- it's not that hard, and they can be a lot of fun!
Hope this helps!

Spying on neighbors sounds fun. Too bad I don't have a dish!

On eBay they go for dirt cheap liek $5 - $15 because once a model is upgraded those can not be used anymore, you can go to like Walmarts also and pick them up new for $20.

Some more random uses for dishes:

1) if the dish's mounting bracket and swivels are stout enough, you could turn the dish into a handsome wall-mounted holder for a compact mac or powerbook. Just be careful that the dish does not decide to uncerimoniously dump your hard-earned Mac on the floor.

2) attach feets to the underside of the dish to make a serving plate/bowl for snacks (if Martha Stewart were a hacker, she would think this a "good thing").

3) polish the dish's inner surface to a mirror-like sheen and make a solar furnace.

enjoy

Why would a parabolic dish become obsolete? Think about it.
Oh, I see. Some smart alec's invented a HYPERPARABOLIC dish. Naturally.

Cheers

If you could get two dishes of the same size and weld them together, it would make kind of an interesting case for a case mod. You could paint it white, and call it the Airport Base Station SE.

i remember a display of two huge (like 10' or more?) wooden reflectors pointed directly at each other, very far apart(like most of a football or soccer field apart), allowing two people to communicate with each other in whispers (it was amazing!). for some reason, military communications and the revolutionary war (or some other muzzleloader era conflict) come to mind.

does anybody else remember this, google didn't work for me on this one!

Near Aurangabad in India there's an ancient fort with a specially designed room in the gatehouse and another one in the keep about 1km away up the hill, where you can hold a conversation with a person in the other room without raising your voice, due to the acoustic design. I wouldn't have believed it unless I'd tried it myself.

Cheers!

EXACTLY! WAY COOL, hugh! incredible is a good word for it.

in the us capitol building, they have sweet spots marked where the configuration of the rotunda dome causes the same kind of thing to occur unintentionally.

At COSI, in Columbus Ohio, there used to be a display similar to this, with two huge dishes at opposing ends of the building. There was a sort of platform a person could get on in the sweet spot in front of each dish, and they would be able to talk to each other.

Cool. Down the road from the house where I grew up (in Mt. Shasta, California) is one of the largest residential geodesic domes in the world. It was really, really big, and when I was in grade school, my best friend lived there. Due (I assume) to the round design, it could be really strange hanging out there- when you were in the livingroom, if you sat on the middle lay-z-boy, you could hear whatever somone in the kitchen was whispering- and the kitchen was 40 or 50 feet away, and on the other side of two walls! There were spots like that all through the house, which made it hard to have a private conversation! Anyway, it was really neat.
Just thought I'd share...

PS That room in India sounds just incredible! I'd love to check that out...

That satellite thing at COSI sounds fun! That living in a dome thing sounds cool too.
Why don't you try using it as a HUGE bowl for salads at parties!
