I've got a Q840av mobo. The guy who sold it to me didn't guarantee it; he said he couldn't get video from it. I took the chance and got a nubus video card to see if that was the problem. Now, I've got the mobo power cable, and I tried it out.
The results: half of a startup chime and then nothing. Nothing appears on the screen from either the onboard video or the card. I don't think the card should need any drivers. It's just an apple 8-bit video card. Must have come out of a II or something. Does it sound like this board has any life in it?

Doesn't sound like it, no.
Have you tried fixing RAM and/or any SCSI devices?

Ah, PRAM battery. A fine idea! A simple problem to test, too. Haven't hooked up any SCSI devices yet, as I just want to find out if the thing will work at all. If it does and tells me that there's no startup disk, big surprise...

actually, zapping the PRAM might make the new drive register with the system, maybe it's still looking for the old one.

checking for problematic preferences might be a good idea too.

Yeah, I'd guess that the PRAM batt is part of the problem... I've had some really strange stuff like this happen before with old Mac's with origional PRAM batts that were totally dead/fried/shorted/whatever. Try taking the batt out, and if that don't work, try replacing it.
Hope this helps, as good luck!

I haven't gotten the board to work yet! Once it gives me something on the monitor I can worry about drives and preferences.

Well, the board seems pretty dead. RAM is all in order, I've tried a working PRAM battery both directions, I've tried both the built in video and the card, and all I can get is a startup chime. I'm going to hook up a hard drive and see if it will make any starting-up noises, but I'm not hopeful. I get a WHOLE startup chime now, though...

I paid for the power cable so I may as well try to find another mobo. This one will make good decor. Too bad I don't have a case for an 840av, though! I wish the Q800 and Q840av used the same casing. It would be a simple mobo switch and mpegdec would run that much better. Off to ebay I go.

Bleh. Dead 840av mobo. I feel sorry for you. I know how it is. I have a dead Macintosh IIfx. All the RAM sockets are filled, has a 512k ROM SIMM, and the original 5.25" half-height HD!

Yeah. I know how it is too. Feel sorry for you dude. As everyone knows, i have a PB180c that died about 4 days after i got it due to failure of the interconnect board. Had the full 14 megs of ram too, and a beautiful colour screen.
