Does the AppleCD 600i require newer drivers than the 300i? I swapped those two in my Q660av running 7.1, and it doesn't regonize CDs. I'm pretty sure that it's supported in this computer, as the knowledge base says that anything sporting a 25 mhz 030 or better should be fine. Will I need a newer system?

I hooked an apple 1200i cd drive up to a LCIII with a virgin 7.1 install on it, and the original cd driver mounted cd's fine.

did you pull it from another mac or from an external case?

use scsi probe to make sure it's not set up as SCSI 0 or 7 or in conflict with something else on the chain and thet it's terminated properly. maybe try re-installing just the CD drivers for the system you have also.

that's what that extension is: drivers for all the Apple CD's.

I think you can use any driver "extension" for any CD-ROM drive. I used the CD/DVD-ROM extension on my Quadra 950, and it works fine.

yup, but the older extensions don't necessarily have the drivers for the newer CD-ROM-R-RW, DVD, whatever. sometimes extensions from newer systems are backwards compatable with older OS's.

I took it from my Q800. I'm pretty sure it was set to SCSI ID 4 and I don't have any SCSI devices on this mac besides those at 0 and 7 anyway (int. HD and whatever it's referring to when it says your computer is ID 7). I suppose I'll try the CD extension from another system version. I've got a few newer ones lying around.

I'm fairly sure that OEM CD-ROM drives (at least the 300i) are set to SCSI ID 3 by default.
1) Use SCSI Probe and see what IDs are already being used by devices on your chain
2) Jump the 600i to an ID that isn't being used

(by the way, why are you using System 7.1 on a Quadra 660av? If you don't upgrade to 8.1 [or at least 7.5.5], I shall be forced to publically flog you with my Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice)

7.1 is FAST. I used to run 8.0 (the highest supported OS, not 8.1) but man was it slow. The finder just crept along drawing windows and whatnot. 7.5-7.6 don't have a lot to offer me that I can't already do, and they take so much longer to start up. The thing works great and it zips right along. So, that's why I'm running 7.1
