On LowEndMac.com they said that you could run all the way up to OS 7.5.5. I tried OS 7.x (this was a while ago, and I don't remember the exact version number) It bombed, gave some error, and rebooted.

Anyone think they know what happened?

Probably some sort of extension problem. My SE gave me trouble when I transplanted a drive that had the OS that would work on it, but incompatable extension flew at me left and right. Eventually I straightened it out. 7.5.5 is the max that I've heard of. I use 7.1. It runs ok for some small text documents that I like to have handy when working on projects.

I reccomend running system 6.0.8 on the SE.

Do you have the SuperDrive (or FDHD) SE, or the regular 800k one?

For SuperDrive and FDHD:
Disk 1
Disk 2

For 800k
Disk 1
Disk 2
Disk 3
Disk 4

I definately suggest 6.0.8 for an SE, regardless of which it actually is.

If it's a SuperDrive or FDHD w/ 4MB of RAM, I suggest running w/ MultiFinder.

With 2MB or lower, Not running Multi-Finder is usually preferred.

Its the dual 800k version.
no internal HD.
it has 2MB of RAM
Multifinder actually seems to keep more memory free.

how do you have a 2MB configuration? a pair of 1MB SIMMs and two empty slots? i've never heard that one, 2.5 sure, but NEVER just 2, did they make 512k SIMMs? otherwise, email me your address and i'll throw a pair of 256k SIMMs in a jiffy bag for you! gawd! i can probably find an extra pair of 1 MB ones!

I have 512kB SIMMs.

they aren't/weren't as common as the 128 and 256, but they DO exist.

SIMMs in an SE need to be in pairs, not quads, so 2x1MB works.

Sure, MultiFinder keeps more memory open, but with Non-MultiFinder, you only have one programme open at a time! You could use Get Info to give each programme you have on the SE 1.5 MB of RAM, and they would all be happy as little oysters not being eaten by a carpenter.

My guess is that there wasn;t enough RAM to load the 7.x OS. It's HARD to cram it into that small a footprint if it's anything more than 7.1 (which would still need to be trimmed down from standard)

If you want to run anything higher than 6.0.8 you NEED 4MB of RAM. I wouldn't even run it in 3MB (a configuration I HAVE made).

128k SIMMs! Blech! Ptui!!!

sure a pair of 1 MB simms works, but why take out the pair of 256's in the other bank?

just seems strange, but not as strange as a 128k SIMM!
