I'd serve on my 2.1 GB HD, but my Dad won't let me have DSL. I'm moving out in a year or so.

Speaking of which, where's Retromac68k?! I haven't seen it online for awhile. That server was the greatest.

We need to buy like a G4 450, download all the files off retro and OS6 and make a mega 68k server!!!!

I could start some kind of server on my G3, I have a cable modem, and a 30 gig hard drive, and plan on getting a 40 gig asap.

I have a hotline server on my quadra 700 right now-
address is : quadrajets.dns2go.com

there isn't much on it at all, but feel free to upload any 68k software, it's a fast server.

Thought I'd through this out there:
I'm getting a 6500 mobo soon, but i dont have the connectors and cables, bummer. If I can get these, it will open me to the world of ATA HD's.

I DO have a dual 800 with 160 GB HD, BUT, as me and timac found to our dismay, for some reason no UL's could occur. Plus this isnt my personal machine so it cannot be on 24/7.

So yeah, jump over into the trading post and buy some of my sweet awesome knarly shtuff and help out the army!

Is it on all the time? It would be good to have a mirror...
Hows the IDE effort coming along, Penguin?

the 6500 will fit in a 630 case! you may need a 6360 PSU tho. i think the PCI slots require a 3.somethingorother voltage that the 6XX's didn't have, not sure, anybody know?

jt . .

p.s. did apple fix the IDE implementation on the 6500/TAM 50 Mhz Bus boards? a slave drive sure would be nice!if it's only going to be a server, you could use the PCI slot for an IDE controller!

I have a 7200 PSU that apparently will work for the mobo, question is, will it fit inside the case. Also, when you say it fits, does that mean the mobo connectors too? The 6500 is like the performas with the slide in mobo and connecter strip at one end apparently. Any clues or suggestions?

P.S.- Should this be reposted in hacks?

I'm already trying to do just that, but my server is superslow!
Sorry, but there's not much I can do!
If you really wanna download something, you can try to contact mw and I'll try to free up more bandwidth for you. NO DSL IN MY AREA!

same wiring harness as far as i know, i think the only reason the 6400 and the 6360 mobos had different part numbers was due to the higher backplane plate/drawer height to the double slot riser PCI card.

but i'm too tired to try to find info, i think there was a discussion on fritter recently about this kind of thing.

Yes, Its on most of the time. The only time the server is down is during a storm (I unplug everything!) and if the cable is out, cause I kinda live in the boonies. But both things are quite rare. So I guess I could start d/l-ing stuff off of torpedobird and create a mirror server

Nomore fear! More Space is Here!
Yep thats right, or at least it will be. I'm getting a 15 GB HD from MacMoose which will be linked to the server. This should all be said and done by the end of next week. A mirror has been on my mind off and on for a bit. Jets, where are you located? Better performance may occur if you are closer to the western coast. Also, since I'm getting a new mobo for this 15 GB(and my use ) the world of ATA drives is open to me for future expansion . So yeah, hope this is good news!

Is there some kind of problem with my server? because no one seems to be going to it and really downloading stuff.....

It has most of everything that torpedobird has, but should be faster

the server address is:

68k.dns2go.com

download/upload something, and let me know if it is working right

hmmm, where are all the games, and applications?
You seem to have missed the "software" folder off of Torpedobird.

BTW:No one EVER goes to MY HL server so don't feel too bad.
Only a couple of people checked it out but then left.
Only a couple of downloads and one upload.

In response to Da Penguin's inquiry as to which ISP I am using for the mirror server...

I am using RoadRunner cable (the only decent broadband in northwestern Ohio). It is $40 a month, but since my family also uses it a lot, I pay half, and my dad pays half.

Cool! You up near Toledo?
I'm almost directly south of you down in between Dayton-Cincinnati!
RoadRunner costs $40 a month?
I thought it was $55 in addition to a cable TV subscription!
Correct me if I'm wrong, because I REALLY NEED AN ISP UPGRADE!!!

I'm between Toledo and Dayton. RoadRunner is $40 a month added on to the cable subscription, I even looked through the paperwork.

It came with free installation, but the 6360 already had an ethernet card in it, and I had already run cable for the tv card in the performa, so I basically had done most of the installation myself.

Big problem is... My family dosen't subscribe to cable... thats an extra $30? that we don't spend already. I think it was AOL that was $55 actually. So we'd be spending lota money we don't have.

I'm probably another 40-50 miles from Sidney. I'm not sure exactly where it is. I don't go to the north suburbs that much.
Which of the larger cities are you closest to?
Celina, OH
Toledo, OH
Dayton, OH

I'm closer to Dayton. Although its a close call between Dayton and Cincinnati. I'm pretty much in the middle of the two.

I think you're still closer to me than the torpedobird server (Pittsburgh). I've never been up to Lima. I usually stay here in the southwest part of the state where I'm comfortable.

Dayton is pretty exciting. There were a couple of drug busts a couple of weeks ago. A huge accident that closed i75 through downtown about a month ago. I mean the WHOLE 4 LANES! I try to keep away from the more colorful parts of town (the west side). I've never been there but I've heard things about it! Its dangerous!

Update on the status of the mirror server: It should be back up by tomorrow. I ran into a few problems getting the 2 gig hard drive that my bro got to work without voodoo, and still having serious electrical problems where the server is located... When the Quadra 700 is running, anything connected to it is energized with 110 VAC! So..I need to run some grounding wire to the outlet, before those little tracings on the mobos get fried!

stupid 1970's wiring.......

LOL i remember one time i was on the phone to one of my friends, and he was talking to me about a LAN party he went to, and they had 14 PCs hooked up to the one circuit, and they overloaded it and there were actually sparks flying out of the circuit breaker!

Thank GOD that our house was built in 1984. All our wiring is reasonably new. What a blessing, with about 10 Macs under the one roof...

FYI, the *real* HL server is going to be off for a while now. Between machines and HD's moving and me trying to find taht darn PSU still and all It cant stay on. Hopefully Jets doesnt mind the extra traffic he will get. On the electrical note (jsut to be consistent) my house is 150+ years old.....but no fear, i did the wiring myself! (well, maybe fear in that case...) hehe

NO, I don't have those stupid fuses (I'd be bankrupt!)... The house was built in 1961, so It has some pretty nasty looking wiring (that cloth insulated stuff, but at least it's not Aluminum...)

Several rooms are on each breaker, as the box is only a 150 amp capacity, and everything is electric here (well pump, heat, stove, drier, hot water)
There is absolutely no room for additional breakers

The well water also is quite high in Sulfur, so it eats wiring (and motherboards) alive!

no, I will not mind the extra traffic on the server, I just upgraded my network and put some extra hard drives in the server...BRING IT ON!!!
