Is it possible to fool the MacOS into thinking the video card has 256 color/grey capability. I have some software that won't run on it because they need 256colors/greys.This is a crazy idea, but worth a shot at. |

Assuming you mean this is an original Macintosh LC you are talking about you need to replAce the VRAM chip with a 512k SIMM. They default configuration of the LC does not have enough VRAM to do he required 512x384@8-bit. I do know, from the original brochure I own with mine, that the 512k VRAM SIMM was an opional extra, and my LC has it nd does 256 colours happily. To change the Colour Depth once you have upgraded the VRAM (or to see if it has it to start with) go to the Apple Menu and Select 'Control Panels'. Then go to the 'Monitors' Panel and set the colour depth there. -- Mark Benson Visit FlatPackMacs Online http://fpm.gotdns.com We have feets Macs Liberated = 6 (8 soon) |

It can go all the way up to 16 colors/greys. Sometimes that isn't enough though. What does the VRAM look like? Is it soldered onto the mobo?

I just checked out your site and was wondering......."Will you be adding info on the LC5xx seris to it?" I have a LC550 that is new to me and I am also working with a LC520, 575, 580, and another 550 at work. Any extra info directly related to them would be helpful. Oh, and to reiterate a question I saw about them here before, "There is a small bay next to the HD that has a track (for a possible sled?) and a large hole for access to the MOBO. Any ideas on what that may have been for? Random thoughts so far have produced a possible place for a fan or maybe a tuner card.

I don't have one to look at directly (they are at home, I'm at Uni) but I can say the VRAM is a removable model with 2 chips soldered onto it and 60 (I think) pins on the contact. The VRAM module is mounted vertically in a socket near the power supply IIRC. quote:

The 'Not So Flat Pack Macs' Site is wating form me to: a) Finish my degree - I am stacked woth Work/Revision etc. at the moment b) Get a job and resultantly some real money (not that which belongs to my bank) c) Buy an LC 580 and/or a Colour Classic to give me a dead certain physical idea of what is in one. Until all 3 of those thing co-incide I'm afraid the site is on hold. -- Mark Benson Visit FlatPackMacs Online http://fpm.gotdns.com We have feets Macs Liberated = 9 |

This is an LC I the first one of its kind. Some programs need 256 colors. I was just wondering. It dosen't have a color monitor either. _________________ HotLineServer: scchicago.dynodns.net Website: http://scchicago.dynodns.net MyForumOnDelphi: http://forums.delphiforums.com/scchicago NOTE:HL AND HTTP SERVER ARE ONLY AVAILIBLE WHEN I'M ONLINE AIM:scchicago87 Yahoo!IM:scchicago

There are 2 sockets for regular 30-pin RAM on the LC mobo. From what I remember, these are white. Now, there is another socket for 68-pin VRAM (Video RAM). It should be significanly longer than the regular RAM socket (seeing as how it has more than twice the amount of pins...). You can add up to 512k of 68-pin VRAM in that one socket (through one 512k 68-pin module, obviously ). With this VRAM upgrade you can push 8-bit color (256 colors) at 640 x 480. Or, if you have that little 12" monochrome monitor, you can push 16-bit greyscale (thousands of greys) at 512 x 384 (that dinky 12" monochrome jobby is fixed-res).
