Hi All!
I'm a new recruit to these forums, and just wanted to say hello, but I had a question, so I thought I'd "correct" (in the words of one Mr. Grady) two birds with one stone..
What is the reason for the hostility against the Performa 600/ IIvi? I've never used one, but was just curious...

They were generally cheap and crippled machines , even for the time, that's all.

Ya know, now that you mention it, an old girlfriend of mine had a Performa 636 that died without any real reason. The mobo just gave up and died. The PRAM battery was fine, the drives and power supply were fine, but the dang thing just up and stopped working one day.
And then her dad's 636 did the same thing a few weeks later!
Should'a thought of that before my last posting!

moved to Lounge. This topic really doesn't have much to do with LC/Performa series machines, but more a question about the 68kMLA.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks for pointing the existence of the IIvi out to me. I checked it out on LEM:
http://www.lowendmac.com/ii/guide.html
and was astonished that there was a slower versionof the IIvx:
http://www.lowendmac.com/ii/iivx.shtml
they didn't dignify that POS with road apple status!
http://www.lowendmac.com/ii/iivi.shtml

Apple really had no shame at all! That was a patheticexcuse for a product!

BLEH!

hey i forgot about the IIvi!!!! Technically though, it didn't run any slower than the IIvx/Performa 600, as the IIvx's 32 Mhz '030 was crippled with a 16 Mhz bus speed, which slowed it down to the speed of the IIvi. So really, there was no difference at all between them. My reccommendation? Either stick with using it as a wordprocessor/Glider player/CD player, or try and find a mobo from a dead Quadra/Centris 650 or 7100 (G3!!!!)

ROTFLMAO!

Overview

The Mac IIvi was a slower version of the IIvx, running a 16 MHz 68030 on a 16 MHz bus. The IIvi was never sold in the United States. Unlike the IIvx, the IIvi cannot accept a level 2 (L2) cache, although it can accept an accelerator.

In terms of performance, on some bnechmarks it held its own against the crippled IIvx.

removing an L2 cache slot is just plain vicious! were the empty pads right there on the same freakin' mobo? BLEH!

and holding your own on somebnechmarksagainst the IIvx is tantamount to saying it was marginally faster than an SE!

jt . .

p.s. i'm amused easily when i'm tired! LOL bnechmarks! an "L" would be a slightly more approptiate typo when rating road apples!

No, we're cool with the 630 series, but the plain 600 is poo!

Hehe i don't mind the 6300. I like to think of them as a machine halfway between the PowerMacs and the 68ks. It has a PPC processor, but it has a lot in common with the LC630. Not only does it use the same case, but it also uses an identical (exactly the same) motherboard architecture. This is why a Performa x200 or x300 does not perform as fast as a PM7200 or something running at the same speed. Overall though, if you want a portable TV that can surf the internet and get your email, look no further than a Performa 5x00!

i've mentioned the 6290 that i swapped out for the 630 in my kid's desk, it can run a few more programs than the 68k rev could, but it's mainly a ClarisHomeWork/Entertainment center. it was a freebie, but for a supposed road apple, it ROCKS!

jt . .

p.s. as on aside, on appropriate uses for CPU's, the K-6 box (the little bugger swiped it right out from under my flight sim joystick! ) runs America Offline's Crapware . . . . ONLINE!!!!!!. it's probably more efficient running that crud under '98 than the same Mac rev. on my two CPU generations newer G4/466 for dialup. i don't remember it EVER bombing. when AOL brought my new 466 to its knees on a regular basis . . . i ordered DSL!

Low end PPCs are good for those programs that should be written in M68k code, but aren't...

Come to think of it, I just showed up here.
I don't really remember saying anything about myself...
I just said what macs that I had liberated.
I never read the FAQ until recently.

Hey! I found the topic again! Sorry I was dead there for a while. Thanks for all the replies. So, what you're telling me by the sound of it (if you're one for standardized testing analogies):
Performa 600/IIvi:68k::6100:PPC?
The 6100 is probably the lousiest Mac I ever used. It made me want my 475 back! Of course, I'm at home now all snuggled up with my Quadra, so no more nightmares
