As I'm getting a IIci on Wednesday I would like to know if it will work fine with a PC -> VGA adapter and my 17" PC Monitor. I know it will not drive an Apple MultiScan monitor but my adapter has several settings for fixed mode monitors, will they work?

Yes, it should work, but you'll have to change the res manually by flipping the switch on the adapter, instead of being able to go into the Monitors control panel and do it.

Unless you've got a seperate graphics card, you will only get 640x480 out of the IIci (640x870 with a portrait display) Should work OK with you 'PC' monitor though.

Well now, I can shed a lot of light on this situation. It seems there are adapters that work and adpaters that don't work. I have an adpater I bought to use on an LCIII (originally) that works on an LCIII, an 840av and a PowerMac 7300. It does not however work on a IIci. Aparrently tha adapter has to support sync re-routing to take the sync (on GREEN on a IIci AFIAK) to whatever it is on your monitor. I had to buy another one with 10 dips on it to allow me to do this. I borrowed a very old one with no dips on from a friend and it worked also. Just a word of caution, make sure, if you buy an adpter for a Mac II, that you get one that supports multiple sync options.

If you buy one with 10 switches, then it should work with nearly every mac and nearly every monitor! You can get them for as little as $15 AUS new!

Yeah. I especially reccommend adapters made by Viewsonic. They have a crapload of switches, and support pretty much every Mac, monitor and reslution. I think they're about 15 bucks, but i'm not sure.

Viewsonic used to (may still), and NEC still does send you an adaptor free if you call them.

I don't remember either asking if I actually had their monitor.

The adaptors are for VGA monitors to Mac video outputs; not the other way.
