i have a LC475 that i got off ebay. the only monitors that i have are VGA monitors.
i am perfectly shure that the monitors and VGA cables work (i'm using one now...), and am mostly shure that the LC works (powrers up, chimes, HD spins, reads).
i aquired a NEC MultiSync adapter thing that allowes me to connect the VGA cable with the Mac Video port. the problem is that i am not getting anything on the monitor when i turn on the LC. it looks like the monitor is not getting any signals from the computer.

does anyone know if what i can do? is the video adapter broken? would the computer still work fine even if the video was fried? should i just go out and get a better adapter?

HELP!!!
(if you need i'll get some pictures of the stuff i'm talking about)

You're using the built-in video port on the LC, right? That's not going to drive a MultiSync monitor, as it was designed for older Apple static monitors. You need a 7" Nubus video card, as well as a LC PDS/Nubus adapter. A Radius Thunder GT would fit the bill nicely.

cinemafia: Does that NuBus adapter for the IIsi let you have NuBus cards on an LC? COOL!!!!!!!!!

Also, you should be able to drive a MultiSync monitor, as i have managed to successfully use a MultiScan 14" on an LC475.

i would only go for that as a last resort. right now the PDS is being ocupied by an ethernet card (that i hope it works).

is there no way to make an LC work with multisync monitors?

Nope. The on-board video will only work on static-sync monitors.

One option is to get a SCSI-to-ethernet adapter (slow, but functional) and then put in a 7" video card. However, it may just be more cost effective to find an old Apple monitor on the cheap. Usually thrift stores have them for a dime a dozen. Well, not literaly, but youknowwhatimean.

You have, maclover? Hmmmm...well this throws things way off. I was pretty sure that it won't without a video card, just like most other 030's. Anybody got any more insight on this?

BTW yeah, the 030 or LC PDS/Nubus adapter will let you use any 7" Nubus card!

Allright I'm talking out my a$$, yeah it is a 040.

Hey, does the Mac-to-VGA adapter you're using have DIP switches? If so they may be out-of-whack. I've seen that happen many times.

spirit: I didn't need to do anything to get the MultiScan to work. I just plugged it in and turned it on.

Okay, cool. I have a half dozen of those things and every now and then you find one that has a bunch of DIP switches like a garage door opener inside of it and if you don't set them right it won't work.

Here's another possibility: The PRAM battery may be dead. There's a few Macs where if the PRAM battery dies, there's no video feed. One of them is the 7100, which happened to me when I got one from a thrift store.

yeah right now i'm looking for a good deal on one of those multi frequency adapters (the ones with the swiches).
in the mean time, if someone could tell me how to remove the battery from the MoBo, i could test it. the battery is in some kind of a plastic cage, and i can't figure out how to open the cage without breaking it.

the battery is about half way down the left edge of the pic.
(i'm using this pic as my desktop now )

My IIfx has two PRAM batteries and they're both in those stupid plastic cages. For me it was just a matter of prying with a small, flat head screwdriver to replace them.

WOOHOO!!!

the PRAM battery was the problem. i droped in the battery from my G4, and lo and behold, the LC displayed its video.

Thanx cinemafia

HOORAY!!! The LC475 shall live again!

Well, you know what they say, the third time's the charm.

Cripes, I just realized how much happier I would be if I was doing tech support for Macs instead of PC's. I'd actually care about whether or not what I did worked, instead of just whether or not I'm getting paid.

Those plastic cages can be annoying, hey? I hate the ones on the LC when the side is blocked by a E-Net card.

Woohoo!
I had the same problem: LC 475 starts up OK, but no video. Swapped the battery wit another LC - hey presto!

Thanks for the good advice, Cinemafia (one year after your original posting )
