I picked up a 56k US Robotics Sportster modem from work (they got DSL), and hooked it to the Newt.

A QUICK little configuring on the Newton (well.. and instaling drivers form unna.org) and I can send/receive e-mail!

tonight, I'll try and post to this thread from the newton itself.

Once I can hit webpages and such, my goal is to get a Jabber system worked up so I can use AIM form the Newton.

Woohoo!
Congrats!
I'd love to do this, but my 120 is only on OS 1.3, and it don't seem to be internet compat. Oh well... <sigh>

Does that mean you are going to write your own IM client?

Hey Coxy-
I'm in (all too sunny) Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, Earth, Milky W-, err, too much info! <slaps forehead>
By OS 2.0 ROM, do you mean an upgrade file, or an actual ROM chip? Jus' wonderin', as I'm pretty much a newbie at this Newton stuff.
I've never been able to get my Newt sync'ed up with a desktop (or portable, for that matter) Mac, but I suspect that the OS is screwey. Any help would be great!
Thanks,
SpaceBoy

No, there is already a jabber client for the Newton, so all I have to do is set up my Jabber account.

Anyway, it's a ROM chip kind thing: you need to open up the Newton (not a task for the faint-hearted) and put it in physically.

Coxy-
Well, doing brain surgery doesn't scare me... toooo much...
Would it involve soldering? Or is it more of a plug-n-play kinda thing? At the moment, the Newt 120 is just sitting in it's plush fold-over case collecting dust and acting as a book-end, so even if I do nuke it, I won't be losing a whole lot (in day-to-day usefulness, anyway). Feel free to email me at huckdunsany-at-hotmail.com if you want to work something out...
Thanks!

plug and play... The chip itself is quite small and I could probably put it in an envelope with a bit of pastic for shock protection...
Got anything to trade for it?

Hmmm... trade....
Well, there's the stuff that I've already listed in the Trading Post, plus newton stuff I've got around... I've got what may be a Newton 2x00 printer cable, but Marchie was interested in that...<hint hint, marchie!>. I don't know if he still needs it, as he hasn't contacted me for a while. My Newton came with a good load of stuff, but I've not been able to really play with any of it, becuase the damn thing has been unable to connect up with a Mac to install any packages. I'm hoping that upgrading to OS 2.0 will help. I've got a 2 meg memory card and a 4 meg card (both Apple branded), the cigarette-pack external modem (this thing is really cool!), a bunch of floppies (most are for PCs... yech!), the PC serial cable, misc. manuals, etc.
Also, on a completely different subject, I recently was lucky enough to've been given two CD-ROMs with x86 versions of the BeOS- I think one is Version 5 Pro, and the other is Version 4 and 5 personal. I'd be happy to loan/trade/copy these, if they'd be of any use...
Thanks!

I'll take one of the PCMCIA memory cards, if you're willing to trade. Drop me an email: coxy@literatureclassics.com.
