My eMate 300 arrived today. It looks in fine condition except for a small scratch on the case and another couple on the screen. The big problem is that its missing the stylus and power supply.

Does anyone know the specs of the Power brick? Also where I can get a replacement stylus? Or will a palm one work OK?

Cheers!

I'm no expert, but I don't see why even a mechanical pencil (without the lead of course) wouldn't work as a stylus...

The mechanical pencil is too sharp to work as a stylus -- DON'T use one! Any PDA stylus would work fine, tho.
Power brick? If it's the same as the Newton one, then I have a spare or too: 7V 500 mA, I think it is?

I think it is the same as the Newton 2000/2001, but different than earlier versions.

I found some info here http://archive.dstc.edu.au/AU/staff/david-arnold/newton/interconnect.html but its a bit technical for my rusty old brain to figure out.

If you could spare one for testing purposes then that would be awesome.

Hmm, do you have a manual for the eMate? Checked the power requirements there?

A bit of research turns up the factoid that any Newton Power Supply will work in any Newton http://www.chuma.org/newton/faq/newton-faq-hardware.html#IIB7 FAQ B7.

So ~Coxy, what sort of offer are you looking at to part with one of your spares. I have a RasterOps Accelerator II quickdraw accelerator board I could swap, or some kind of old Nubus video capture board (I'll have to check its details)... or as a last resort there's always cold hard cash.

Whaddaya say?

Cheers!

I beielive your BEST bet is to head to Radio Shack.

If you look in the Newton FAQ, you'll see reference to the correct AdaptaPlug Multi-Volt brick you need. you need the Yellow Tip.

you should get the 1000mA version, not the 800mA, since the eMate and 2x00 series use more power than the 1x0's.

useing the 500mA from ~Coxy will power your eMate, but not charge the batteries.

On a side note, If I hadn't gotten the newton 2100 I have now, I would probably have kept useing the 130, and gotten an eMate as well.

I like my 2100 alot. Paired with the newton keyboard, I can take notes in class, made even easier with the Newton breifcase I bought from Da Penguin.

I hope it lasts a long time, and if I can get the job I want this summer, I'm planning on buying a spare 2100, for the time when this one dies (hopefully no sonner than 4 or 5 years from now, if then)

I'll swap it for one of your boards if you like. What does the capture board do exactly? If it can display ~640x480 with an RCA in, then I want it! ;)

The problem with the newton transformers is that they do 7 volts - no commercial plugpack I've found will do 7V...

Its called a Quickimage 24. No video out I'm afraid, but has several inputs (I think RCA, S-vid and a couple of others). Not too sure of the details I'm afraid.

If you're willing to swap then drop me an e-mail and we can sort out the details.

Cheers!

Just another question: do you have software, or do you know where I can get it?

No I don't. Its one of those eBay projects thats been sitting around waiting to be looked at. To be honest, I don't even know if the card works, though I have no reason to suspect that it wouldn't.

~Coxy, I've been googling in search of information on this card... Can't find much though.

Here's the address of the manufacturer:

MASS Microsystems
810 West Maude Avenue
Sunnyvale, CA 94086
Phone: (800) 522-7979
QuickImage 24 Ver. 2.0 (capture)
HitchHiker Portable series
Various optical drives (laser, videodisc, CD)

No idea if they're still a going concern, however due to the nature of the industry I'd suspect not..

Also found a bit of historical info on them:

quote:
Massie is building off the success of two prior ventures. In 1984 he founded Mac Memory and built that company into an $8 million enterprise in two years and sold it to Syclone Technology in San Jose, Calif.

Massie turned around and founded his second company, Mass Microsystems in Sunnyvale, Calif. building it into a $40 million company that built multimedia products. RAM Tech acquired Mass Microsystems in 1988.

In 1991, Massie sold his stake in the company and moved to Lexington, where he started FOCUS Enhancements.

And lastly, I found someone who was using this card to capture images for his website. I've e-mailed him asking if he's still got the drivers floating around somewhere... but I don't have high hopes.

Dunno if you're still interested in trading for this item, but if not we can discuss alternatives

Cheers!

It's perfectly safe to use the Radio Shack adapter on 7.5 volts. I've done it with both my Newtons, and no one has reported the Radio Shack ones to damage the Newts like MANY MANY other adapters do.

you need to find an adapter that says it has a regulated or rated output. Thus, if the voltage goes up from normal, the output won't. That's the trick.

7.5 V is fine.

I'll swap a telescopic MP120 stylus and a Newton power adaptor for the capture card, if you want... let me know.
