I have my quadra, but am not sure how to work it. a floppy come with it and has some software on. I can run some games and the software on the floppy does this mean I have an os? What os would I be advised to run on my quadra?I am still looking for the modem connection. I have a cd caddy coming but do also need a hard drive sled. Where can I get internet software from? I need a dialer and a browser and a dearchiver. Thanks for your time. shaktiman |

Check out the MLA links page for software. the first thing you'll need is an OS, so start with System 7.5.5 That will give you access to the modem (external modem via the printer and modem ports, unless you have some kind of internal modem?), and control panels for setting up your internet connection.Early versions of Netscape and Explorer will work fine, although there are many other browsers to choose from. For de-archiving the best bet is Aladdin's Stuffit Expander and DropStuff. You will be able to find all this software here (somewhere): http://homepage.mac.com/mla68k/links.html Tell us more about your Quadra (like RAM, disk space, which Quadra...etc) and we will be better able to assist. cheers Flash! 68k MLA ParaMedic |

Yes. If you can boot then you have an OS. You can find out what version by going to "about this computer" (or "about this macintosh") under the little apple in the top left corner of your screen. You can run any MacOS from 7.1 thru to 8.1. Personally I run 8.1 on my Q800 due to enhanced compatibility with more recent software, plus that sweet platinum interface. In general, there's a gain in functionality, balanced by a drop in performance when running newer system software. Once you have that modem, the software you request will be easily locatable. A good first stop might be www.versiontracker.com Cheers! I wouldn't recommend going all the way to 8.1 Compatibility is great, but I don't know what kind of quadra this is, and there's the chance that 8.1 will be too slow for it. On my 660av, 8.0 was very very pokey. 7.1 zips along. 8.0 or 8.1 would probably be best suited for a 33mhz quadra or higher. I've heard that the 900 and 950 can actually be noticeably slower than a 650 or 800. In terms of system versions, I'd start low and work my way up. You don't need a hard drive sled, that's what fastens the internal HD to the casing. It should be there, and even if it isn't it's no big deal. The modem port is on the back, with a telephone icon above or next to it Tell us more! Good luck! { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

I've got my 950 running 7.5.5, and it's fine. Just drop in the Appearance extensions, and you've got I Can't Believe It's Not Platinum™!~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 00014 Macs liberated |

Ty Ty TyI have a quadra 840av, with 84 meg ram(installed myself yesterday), 1 1/2 meg vram(if I installed it right), a 1.2 gig hard drive, I have a 500 meg hard drive but want a drive sled to fit it in, os is 7.1.1 If I remember correctly, I have a ktx modem that I am trying to connect, a cd caddy which should be arriving any day now, a keyboard and a mouse. I am typing this from my dodgy pc(which keeps saying this program has caused an illeagal operation on any program it chooses to dislike that day). My pc is knackered. I love my quadra, and I love my st. I am erm if I got a disk alias of a floppy how can I get rid of it? how can I format my hard drive? What os should I run? I will just find a free one I hope I think 7.5.5 I shall buy MagicMac. I shall go into town now and see if I can get a cable to connect my quadra to my modem. shaktiman |

How much ram do you have in your 660AV? My LC475 has 20 megs of ram, and runs 8.1 quite nicely. And on my LC630, which has 36 megs, its just zoom zoom zoom. I am not kidding. Conclusion? Running 7.6.1 on anything thats at least a 20 Mhz 68LC040 with 20 megs of ram is an illegal waste of time. -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! I wouldn't suggest you run 7.5.5. I ran it on my 6100 and it was not a pleasant experience. Upgrade to 7.6.1 or 8.1 (available off eBay for a reasonable price).Macs Liberated: SE, IIsi, Quadra 700, 6100, PB 5300, PowerMac 5400 PCs liberated from Windows: 3 |

*ahem* you mean "Running anything newer than System 6.0.8 on an iMac is selling out" ? or "If you run anything newer than System 6.0.8 on an iMac, then you are a sell-out" ?
