She only has 8 megs of ram.She only has a 40 meg hard drive. Her name is Georgina, she is my LCIII, and i still love her more than any of my other Macs. Although she's not the Pentium-1 killer she used to be back when she had 20 megs of ram and a 80 meg hard drive, and she has been taken back down to 7.1, i still love her more than any of my other Macs, even my LC630, Hackintosh, PowerBooks, or my iMac. Every time i start her up, i get this nice fuzzy feeling inside me. I'm not sure why...good memories maybe. She has been through many eras, from the newbie era ('93-'94), to the "getting-more-interested-in-technology-era" ('95-'96), was my main weapon through the Mac Zealot era (1996-97), and is now still going strong in the General Mac Freak And General Computer Expert era. Sometime within the next few months i want to give her a ram upgrade, to 20 megs, and a 160 meg hard drive. A clean install of System 7.6.1 and a VRAM boost to 768k to wash it all down. She was my first Mac...i honestly don't know how i can pay back the huge debt i have...we've had so many good times together. Oh well, thats my blurb for the time being. -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6!!! Aa a fellow 'III owner and flat pack mac fanatic (see website) I have the following advice: Slap in a 32MB SIMM Slap in a 512MB VRAM SIMM Slap in a 250MB Hard Disk Keep OS 7.1 for speed and reliability, I only recommend 7.5 or higher for 040s.... Mine is now a network server/router and runs DHCP, DNS and HTTP services soon to be joined by Internet Sharing when I get a modem for it. Actually, back in the good old days of the 80 meg HD and 20 megs of ram, it ran 7.6.1 extremely well. I recommend it for any 32 bit clean '030 based Mac as long as they have the HD space and RAM. IMHO, on anything thats at least a 25 Mhz 68LC040 with 20 megs of ram, running 7.6.1 is an exercise in wasting time. I installed 8.1 on my LC475 as soon as i got it, and i haven't looked back. I would LOVE to up the RAM to 36 megs, but 72 pinners are really expensive here in australia. -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! My LCIII was also my first Mac, I found her ambandoned on the side of the road about 18 months ago. I brought her home and restored her to mint condition, and I do mean MINT. I tore that machine apart, cleaned the casing in the bathtub with some Pine Sol and a toothbrush, used about 50 Q-Tips to make the motherboard look bright and shiny, took apart the power supply and blew it out, and then took apart the keyboard and scrubbed each key by hand. I know, I am nuts... Since then I have maxed out the RAM by adding a 32MB stick, I popped in an Ethernet card, and 1 month ago I added a pristine condition 160MB IBM Hard Drive. This is the machine that made me fall in love with the Macintosh, and dump all my PC's. I now have 7 Macs, 5 of which are 68K and I love them all. BTW... 1st post. :D :D :D

DUDE...great story. Did it have much yellowing on the casing? If so, how did you get rid of the yellowing? My LCIII, and a few of my other Macs and peripherals have turned yellow over the past couple of years, and i would LOVE to reverse the yellowing. BTW: What other Macs do you have? The last time i saw a listing of your machines, all you had were your LCIII, IIsi, and your PeeCee. -------------------------- Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! Not barmy in the least mate. I spent a good 4 days cleaning my LC and the two Apple Keyboard IIs I have to almost mint condition. I also bought a completely new face plate and bezels from a guy in Texas for my 840av just to get rid of the old scuffed and security marked panel. I set to and cleaned most of the crap off thacase of that machine too. Well... It is a relief to find out that I am not the only insane one. MacLover; Luckily the machine was not that yellow, just quite dusty. I used a mixture of I think, Windex and Bleach to get rid of whatever yellowness there was. My IIsi is the yellow one, and nothing I have tried has done more than help a little. However, my friend has recomended that I try something called "Mean Green". Yeah, it was just a few months back (February) that I had my PeeCee, my IIsi and my LCIII. I didn't know what it was, but I loved those two Macs much more than I ever loved the PC, I knew I had to have more... A few weeks into February, I found a relatively gutted Centris 610 in an office dumpster, I played around with it and was getting ready to clean it when, my PC went out the door, and an iBook 500/DVD/640MB/30GB/AppleCare landed in my lap for the price of $900. I found all of my computing time being spent on the iBook, and I started to forget about the 68k, since they didn't seem to matter, being that I was running OS X accross the room. After a month or so with the iBook, my love for the 68k's started to resurface. I decided to see what I could do to the cosmeticc conditon of the Centris, when I came across a Performa 600 at a thrift shop for $10. The Performa too precedance over the Centris and was quickly restored. A week later at another thrift store, I came accross what I had been wanting for months... A complete Mac 512k system, with original keyboard, mouse, manual and... carrying case. I was able to talk the manager into giving me the setup for $10. The 512k was put through the same thing as the LCIII, including the keyboard. After cleaning it as well as I could with Windex, I spent 2 hours scrubbing it with a bleach soaked cloth (Headache). It does look better, but still has a yellow tint. Almost immediately after finishing up with the 512k, I was crusing on eBay in the "Other" category, when I saw a PowerComputing - PowerCurve 120, complete with a 14" Apple Monitor, plus the original keyboard and mouse, I then noticed the "But It Now" option, which read $30... so I did . And now there is 7!!!

You know, it's weird... Back when I was in 7th grade, our computer lab was filled with LCII's. At the time I had no interest in computers, knew nothing about them, and was to poor to own one. The only impression I remember having about those machines was that they were slow, dirty, sticky, and ugly. Now, I would love to get my hands on a few of them. How life changes...

Update:The LC III has received a 1.2GB Hard Drive and a 512k VRAM upgrade, which now allows it to do "Thousands of Colors"... :D I was looking forward to getting a web browser installed on the LC so that I could surf the net on it. Since the LC doesnt have a CD drive, I just took out the drive and put it in the PowerComputing system, then copied the installer files to the HD (From OS 8.0/8.5 CD's), and then put the drive back in the LC to install the programs. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to get any of the browsers running, I keep getting errors. I have tried Netscape 3.0 and IE 3.0. Grrr... Then I went and got DSL, which I didnt know required special software, software that doesn't work on 68k Macs... Looks like my internet adventure will have to wait.

2 of my 950's are hideously dirty, with sticky pop spills and collections of dust everywhere. Collections - (noun, plural) dust particles that date back to 1993 including special dust collected from the great flood and a hootie and the blowfish album... anyway, i picked up a 476 with monitor that was absolutley spotless, he could have told me he just took it out of the box. there was not a speck anywhere. ANYWHERE!... it was clean. _______________________ Sgt. Thelip Heavy Weapons Specialist 950 division Liberated Macs: 12 |

My 950 is has very clear skin, but it took a coat of AcneDerm Those horizontal NuBus cards do a great job of collecting dust, though. Unfortunately it's temporarily down to 4 screens 'coz I needed a 640x480 card for a IIcx. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

About case yellowing... there's probably nothing that can be done to reverse the yellowing process short of sandblasting the case.I've heard that the main cause of yellowing in older computer cases is UV light. The high energy UV damges the plastic and so you can't just clean it to remove the yellow. In theory you could scrub off the top layer of plastic with harsh abrasives to get rid of the yellow part, but I don't think your mac would like you very much if you tried that. I've heard of people selling used computers outside and seeing them turn yellow in one day. Most glass windows filter out UV (that's why you can't tan indoors), so you don't have to worry about it getting yellow that way. But if your window is open, even if the light doesn't directly hit your mac, the reflected UV bouncing off the walls, ceiling etc will turn the mac yellow. Even indoor lighting has a certain amount of UV in it, especially fluorescent lighting. So unless you keep your mac under a shroud, it'll be tough to avoid the dreaded yellow case. mathgeek 68K Macs Liberated: LC, Performa 636, IIx |

*Sigh*My first mac was an LC575 I "liberated" from a school trash can in three pieces, 3 cases, 2 w/out motherboard or faceplates, and one of THOSE with no HD. I loaded itt with all Ambrosia Software's games, and it sat there and ran OS 7.5.5. Goodbye, mac, I loved you before the lightning hit :) Fortunately, two days before, I managed to pull the ROM off and onto my PC, so it's child lives on in my Basilisk II emulator. It's loaded with OS 8.1 and Escape Velocity: Nova, and on a AMD T-Bird 850 with a Geforce 2 MX400 64MB graphic card, it runs smoothly! PS: E-mail me and I'll e-mail you the setup, about 130 MB. ------------------------- My first and last mac is an LC575 BASILISK II RULES! ------------------------ Edited by - LC575 on 31 Jul 2002 17:33:21 |
