Operations here at the University of Toronto seem to be going well according to plan thus far, but I do have one question. I think this is the right place to ask it...

Is it considered desirable to ally with those in the Linux community? There's a couple of people over here (including my girlfriend) who are looking at doing something similar to what we're doing, except that they'd be taking old PCs and setting them up as Linux boxen. The way I see it, we could collaborate in terms of finding old machines, technical skills to get them up and running, etc., and this collaboration just improves the quality of our operations here.

In the larger sense, it makes sense to us to ally with these people. I mean, we're all fighting for the destruction of the Arch-Enemy Micro$oft... right?

Views and comments encouraged.

No! We do 68K computers, Macintosh computers, and we Liberate them as an army.

Thus, only Apple computers with Motorola 680x0 processors are welcome, and we also allow Apple IIs and Newtons for their coolness.

The Vintage Mac systems are very unique, and I doubt either 'side' would get much help from collaboration.

I think you misunderstand me, Coxy... I'm not saying that we change our mission; our mission is to liberate old Macs (and associated - Apple II, Newton, etc.). I'm just saying that some joint operations with such natural allies can only benefit both sides, IMHO.

Besides, if you re-read the post, you will clearly observe that the stakes are rather high for me, as my girlfriend is one of the would-be allies... thus, I don't know if I have a choice...

I like the idea a lot, but ~Coxy was right: how would it help us? Reviving a mac and a crappy old PC are far different tasks. Also, you're not going to find a lot of macs anywhere they have old PCs. Now it might be more common, what with iMacs being used in offices, but businesses always used PCs, not 68k macs. I don't know of any place besides a school that would have both. Oh, or one of those crazy ass warehouses we've seen pics of. I think we should give a pat on the back to anyone who's using a PC to run anything but windoze, and I'm all for linux and all the open source goodness it includes, but I don't see what any of us would get out of an alliance.

They are allies to Mac users, but the people here are die-hard 68k fanatics who want nothing but 68k Macs. Get your girlfriend to put Linux on some 68k Macs and she will be loved here.

(Then send the 68k Mac with Linux on it to me, because I am seriously thinking about putting a *nix on one myself...that is, if a certain moderator[wink, wink, cinemafia] would read a certain topic and tell me how much it would cost to ship me that nice roomy 230MB hard drive of his...)

I'm debating which Mac to RUN Linux on... although I'm leaning more towords NetBSD instead.

The Classic II is a good candidate, except for the lack of Ethernet abilities, which leads me to think of the SE/30..

Yeah, but you try finding an Ethernet card for an SE/30 sometime... I've got such a machine, and I'd *kill* for an Enet card!

Why does GORDOOM get a Stick of Justice but mine was destroyed?!?! This is wholly unfair! And don't say it's because there can only be one Quadra/Centris Stick of Justice - mine was the Quadra AV Stick of Justice!

I tried to put a TM sign after that but I don't know how...and you know why? I'm using a PEECEE! Eek! What does my school think it's doing?? Such a lack of usability. It sickens me. Also, the keyboard bites.

All Sticks of Justice that aren't owned by moderators (and aren't section titles) are null and void.

I'm glad we got THAT cleared up. There seemed to be quite a bit of injustice in who got one, which is ironic considering what it is we're talking about having here.

So that's how you do it! Finally...this whole time I've been hunting for and copy/pasting the trademark sign. Jesus...who would've thought it was that retarded. I have to try it three times before I get the number combo right!

I second that. The Option-key keystrokes on the Mac are much better than those dumb Alt codes on PCs.
