you need a DB-9 to DIN-8 connector to plug into the modem or printer serial ports (paper and telephone handset icons respectively) DO NOT plug any serial device into a DB connector on ANY ADB equipped Mac EVER! the 512k had DB-9 serial connectors, but i don't know about the Plus offhand. mostmodems can use the adapter in the old Palm Mac Connection Kit (about $15 retail) other than that it's catalog order time unless you have an extra modem or printer cable to hack onto a DB shell that will mate with your cable. the palm cable might require a gender changer, i don't recall, but i'll dig mine out if you can find a source for that and no other adapter. which modem did you get, maybe somebody will know about compatability.

I have good news:-), but also bad news:-(

I have connected my quadra to a monitor(cheering).

The hard drive with o.s 8.1 is reportedly corrupted. I get asked if I want to initialise the drive. Should I do this? Can I retrieve o.s 8.1?

I am going to email the guy that sent the drive see if he will help, How will I get an o.s otherwise?

Does anyone have or know of a simple dialer program to enable me to connect to the inrternet?

The good news? well I earlier reported that the data cable connecting the drives wasnt long enough but with this second look it is so I now have a cd drive, floppy drive, 1.2 gig hard drive and a 500 mb hard drive.

What?? They're not hard to find. I know a place to get SIMM doublers or even SIMM quadruplers. Might not work too well though. It's a huge pain in the ass to find anything at MCM, but at www.i-mcm.com, you can get these, no problem. I might have the cat# somewhere if you want. And yes, they're for 72 pin SIMMs

WOW! I've been looking for thise things for a LONG time!

one important thing to remember tho: SPEED!

If you want to put 30 pin SIMMS into 72 pin Macs, then you have to be sure that the speed of the 30 pin simms is fast enough (usually 80ns or faster)

I have lots of 32 pin simms, but most at 100 or 120ns, so not much use in newer macs.

A few quadruplers tho would let me use all these 256k SIMMS I have in some of the 68k Macs I have.. hmmm...

I don't know wether this is relevant to the conversation but SIMM stakers will likely not fit in an 840av, the room between the memory banks and the PSU/Drive assemly is pretty tight.

Agreed. They'd have to be pretty slimline, because the clearance between the mobo and the plastic case frame is pretty small. Sorry to say, but now that i think of it, i really don't think that a SIMM stacker will fit.

It probably won't fit in a 650 either... no space between RAM and drive chassis...

Very cool concept though...expecially if a person makes their own case from scratch...
