Sorry to be a pain, I just want to check what type of modem I should buy. Do I just buy a serial modem? How can I attach the modem?

Somebody said take the geoport out and then plug the modem in, is that right? is that an easy task?

If I were you, I'd get one that is designed for Macs (prefarably with Mac drivers included.) Then all you do is plug it in to the serial port on the Quadra and turn it on!

i'd look thru the list of supported modems in the setup window of my ISP. i son't think i've used any mac specific modem software or drivers on anything but a pb, ever!

The Diamond Supra 56k is a good modem. And, remember, use the initialization string "AT&F", it works wonders.
