My PowerBook 165 has some odd things (maybe) going on with its screen. There are stripes of different lightness going horizontally and vertically from windows and images (i.e. the startup smiley face). Is this normal?

I'm lazy tonight - but if it's a passive matrix screen, then thats what gets called 'banding'. it's Just How It Is!

Of course, if its particularly bad, or is active matrix... then it's just plain Broke :D

The 165 has a greyscale passive matrix screen, the 165c has a colour version (passive.)

But: "...it's the best-looking passive-matrix color display I've seen on a notebook computer." MacUser, April 1993"
Does it look like a problem, or something natural? Is it intermittent or forever, or has it just started lately?

One of my friends has a PowerBook 5300cs [cs=crappy screen - the passive matrix one]. It does the same thing, with the bands coming up and down, left and right, from the edges of things on the screen.

Yep, this is normal. I had the same problem on my old PB 160. It looks even worse in color (i.e., PB 5300).

P.S. - The title of this thread made me think of the electronic music group, Soul Oddity, whom I haven't heard a record from since '97. Hmmm....

And I have the same on my PB 145 and PB 520c/PPC. It sucks, but what can you do about it?

The only option I see out there is to get ahold of an Active Matrix display (from the 180 series for the 165, 540 series for the 520) and swap them.

As annoying as 'banding' may be, I'm rather relieved to know that it's normal and my 'book isn't dying!

"Space Oddity" was actually what I was thinking of when I titled this thread.

This is weird...

Right now as i type this on my iMac, i am looking at the screen on my PowerBook 145B, and i can't see any bonding at all. Do I have a special screen, or am i just used to it?
