So, over the weekend I was tweaking some AIFF tracks that were to be burned to CD-R using SoundEdit 16 2.0, a FAT app that I use on both my Quadra 840av and my 7500. While doing so, I was stunned to learn that my Quadra 840av was much faster in dealing with the files than the 7500!For instance, opening a 75-100MB AIFF file on the 840av was much, much faster than on the 7500, I'm talking seconds as opposed to minutes. Running effects was marginally faster on the Quadra, which even of itself is amazing. Saving files seemed to be roughly the same. What the heck? Shouldn't it be slower all around, not the same or faster?? Well, I guess the 840av's 20MB/sec max Ultra-Wide RAID array, which it was reading the AIFF's from, as opposed to the 7500 reading from a 10MB/sec max narrow SCSI drive could be factor. But, still, this blew me away...I couldn't believe how much faster tha Quadra was working with large AIFF files compared to my second-gen PPC. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Regular Disappear! Right, SoundEdit 16 version 2.0 can run on both 68k's and PPC's, however, second-gen (604e) PPC's should be able to run it faster than a high-end 68k. If it was a first-gen PPC, like a 7100, there'd be no question that the 840av would run it faster.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Regular Disappear! |

yea, but with FAT apps the PPC is essentially working in 68k mode (reading 68k code which has been re-vamped a bit so it doesn't crash the PPC) and that slows it down a bit...i think...I could be wrong about that one.....??68k MLA ParaMedic |

No, what you refer to is a plain 68k app running in emulation mode on the PPC chip - FAT code refers to apps with PPC and 68k instructions inside.Anyway, I know my 950 has the highest Disk Benchmark in my house... ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 00014 Macs liberated |

Well, one way or another, it's good to know how quick I can edit huge audio files on my Quadra! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 Regular Disappear! |

Well...my Quadra 610 feels alot faster than my 6100. It even feels faster than 5200's, granted those are dog machines. The 610 is only pushing OS 7.1 and the others OS 8.1. The 610 also seems to have a personality, it has fast boot times. Quadras are just honest Apples...just don't let them walk off on ya with them feet of theirs:)
